Unlike typical porters, our Baltic Porter is brewed in the traditional style as a bottom-fermenting lager. The result is a luxuriously round, but robust, black beer with a mild bitterness. A special blend of roasted malts provides this porter with flavors and aromas of chocolate and coffee, and you’ll enjoy it’s subtle hints of cherry-smoked malt.

Dark black pour with a thick moussey brown head. The nose is loaded with dark toasted malt. A touch of dark chocolate and dried cherries over a kiss of soft vineousness. There is a touch of soft earthy coffee and stewed fruity sweetness. A light salty/cocoaish roastiness with a fairly savoury charry maltiness. Plums and licorice over a sweet but roasty finish. There is a kiss of smokiness on the back as well. Nice.

Bottle at Paul’s place for Kan’s visit. Pours a dark black with a thin tan head. Plum, prune, dark chocolate. Flavors follow the nose, the dark chocolate is excellent. Light booze comes through, but nothing overly distracting, just a gentle warming note. Finishes with some light sweet chocolate. Really tasty.

Corked and caged 750ml bottle from 2008. The dark, dense, mahogany colored body is crowned by a tall, billowing head of khaki foam. Displaying excellent retention, the froth leaves thick sheets of lacing all over the glass. The aroma is of rich malted chocolate, scorched caramel, stewed figs, raisins, and a hefty dose of bready Belgian yeast. There’s definitely a hint of lactose in there, as the chocolate comes off really creamy, almost milky. Flavors follow suit, ultra rich cocoa and caramel showing dark and decadent, with loads of fruity complexity. Figs, dates, and toasted nuts all emerge from the depths, as does a hint of coffee roast. The palate is initially very thick and creamy, showing just a bit of dryness and a slightly tart twang on the finish from the Belgian yeast. This is an Excellent Baltic porter.

Pours a tantalizing jet black with a frothy and stable beige head. The aroma possesses some strong roasted character with hints of chocolate and molasses. The beer really comes alive on the palate, heavily bodied yet smooth...really good to swish around in your mouth a few times after each sip. Opens up with mildly bitter chocolate intermingled with notes of toffees, milkiness, and the usual earthy, nutty flavors you get with some of Les Trois Mousquetaires’ other selections. Alcohol is well disguised as always; just a great brew all around.

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2009 Bottle, 2009 Vintage. Dark pour, with frothy tan head. Aroma is meaty, some smoke, coffee, salt. Taste is meaty as well but with a bit of malty sweetness and alcohol. Very long lingering finish.
