COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unlike typical porters, our Baltic Porter is brewed in the traditional style as a bottom-fermenting lager. The result is a luxuriously round, but robust, black beer with a mild bitterness. A special blend of roasted malts provides this porter with flavors and aromas of chocolate and coffee, and you’ll enjoy it’s subtle hints of cherry-smoked malt.

Pours dark with minimal head. Aroma roasted coffee, malt, chocolate. Taste follows suit with aroma with a touch of smokiness. Medium body, light biterness, nice porter

Switch the toastiness to roastiness, add a pinch of alcohol and you’re quite there - the general relation between doppelbocks and baltic porter. By using the same yeast strain, we get similar alcohol connotations, although there may be a further vinous feel here. We’re dealing with both blackberry-like fruitiness and a couple of dark grapes. Not quite juicy though as the lager yeast has done a remarkable attenuating job. The carbonation is therefore quite lively for a beer of this type and the associated alcohol feels warming, but never serves as a focus point flavour-wise. Obviously, a fair bit of roastiness is constantly present.

Bottle bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours blackish brown with a frothy mocha head that leaves some thick trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, caramel, sweetened coffee, dark chocolate, butterscotch, moist soil, charred wood and toffee. Taste is sweet and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, raisins, prunes, dark chocolate, brown sugar sweetened dark roast coffee, sweet liquorice candy, hay and soil. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny viscous and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and malty with roasted malts, caramel, butterscotch, sweetened dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, charred wood and soil. Solid baltic porter but a tad bit too sweet.

(Bottle) Pours black with dark brown to black with a pale brown head. The aroma holds sweet dark bread up front with undertones of caramel, potatoes, liquorice and earth. The flavour is near medium sweet, light bitter and tiny acidic with notes of dark bread, dark syrup and earthy hops. The mouthfeel is clean and sticky with a soft carbonation. Medium to full carbonation. Quite bock-ish.

Sample at SBWF 2014. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some dark fruit, toffee and vanilla. Similar sweetish taste. Some warming alcohol in the finish. A nice desert beer.

Almost black, clear around the edges beer with a healthy tan head. A very strong, considerably attenuated dark beer which has a fair bit in common with their Porthos (doppelbock). By using the same yeast strain, we get similar alcohol connotations, although there may be a further vinous feel here. We’re dealing with both blackberry-like fruitiness and a couple of dark grapes. The carbonation is therefore quite lively for a beer of this type and the associated alcohol feels warming, but never serves as a focus point flavour-wise. Obviously, a fair bit of roastiness is constantly present. I can’t really box it into a coffee reminding or chocolate reminding mold, more like plain borderline burnt toast. Thankfully, the fruit notes are devoid of inherent acidity, thus avoiding any clash or astringency. Obviously spot on what they were aiming at. Solid all around. Light-medium body has obviously lost a fair bit of thickness through the yeast’s enthusiasm. Seriously, this is much drier than I’d have expected. Certainly not a typical vinous, slightly tart, fruity and rather sweet baltic porter with bold contrasting chocolate notes. More of a roasty doppelbock whose yeast went beyond the call of duty. Now to determine if I like it more than the Porthos... I’m afraid I might be alone in that camp, but I think not. Both are really worth trying, but afterwards, between the very good one, quite available, at a retail price 4.99$ and the very good one, very rare indeed, at 7.99$, I’ll stick with the Porthos.

10% bottle brought back from Canada shared at the Craft Beer Picnic. Pitch black pour with a creamy beige head. The nose is rich, umami, rich bready chocolate cake - very savoury. Med-full bodied with a lively sparkling carbonation. The taste is chocolatey, rich, you definitely get sweet syrupy chocolate smoke - wonderful. Honestly it wowed everyone who tasted it.

Sample at SBWF 2014. Black beer with a nice brownish head. Roasted chocolate aroma, figs, raisins, caramel, plums, vanilla, licorice, toffee, some vinous notes. Fruity caramel flavor, licorice, figs, dades, grapes, licorice, chocolate, cream, some raisins. On the sweet side, but delicious.

Bottle pour@5e Mondial de la Bière, Mulhouse - SO. Deep shoe-brown to black with a reddish tinge and minimal head. Aroma of caramelised nuts, macerated cherry, milk chocokate, pregnant dark Doppelbock malts without too much of its abv breath. Tastevis quite the explosive surpise in perfect balance: rum cask, cocoa, leather-clad figs (the older dog’s bollocks), dried yeast, demerera sugar. Thick, round, gorgeous mouthfeel: as good as bottom-fermenting without icebocking gets.

On tap at Apex. A: Dark black with a light cappuccino head. Legs. N: Cocoa, coffee, vanilla, smoke, char, and big caramel. Black peppercorn and rye bread. T: Big sweetness and a huge smoke component to keep this from becoming cloying. M: Oily, medium-heavy body. Alcohol is well-hidden. O: This is incredibly rich and tasty. Huge flavor components, but there’s enough balance to keep things interesting and lively. Highly recommended; definitely one of my favorite Baltic Porters yet.
