3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 9, 2012 2011 Vintage. 10%. Lots of roast, bitter chocolate and a little vanilla in the aroma. Flavor is sweet chocolate and bites on the palate. Finishes silky with a subtle carbonation. A little too sweet. Well done but leaves something to be desired. I’d like to age another to allow some of the sweetness to mellow and let some flavor develop and meld.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Apex.
A: Dark black with a light cappuccino head. Legs.
N: Cocoa, coffee, vanilla, smoke, char, and big caramel. Black peppercorn and rye bread.
T: Big sweetness and a huge smoke component to keep this from becoming cloying.
M: Oily, medium-heavy body. Alcohol is well-hidden.
O: This is incredibly rich and tasty. Huge flavor components, but there’s enough balance to keep things interesting and lively. Highly recommended; definitely one of my favorite Baltic Porters yet.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle shared with Dani and Dan at the Pig in Boca. Poured into a small snifter. Jet black pour with a tan lasting head. Some mild lacing. The aroma was roasted malts, brazil nuts, dark chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. The taste was fairly the same with the nice roastness hitting first and then the dark chocolate and bitter coffee finish. Also nuts, prunes, and vanilla. Medium to full body, creamy mouth. All around terrific. Slightly sweet.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours cola colour with small beige head. Aromas of milk chocolate, vanilla, toast and a hint of cherry - overall quite sweet but inviting. Taste is also very sweet - caramel, dried fruits, hint of roasted meat, praline. Not much bitterness but a little dryness in the finish. Closer to a quadrupel than a porter but a very good dessert beer regardless. Medium body works well, could be cloying if more viscous.

Smoke and roast malts dominate the aroma. No hops to speak of. Caramel, sweet and sticky. Leads into the finish as well.
