Bouteille 750ml. De couleur ambrée-orangée et voilée. Nez de malt sucré aux faibles notes rôties, de caramel sucré, de houblon fruité (agrumes, marmelade, notes d’abricots), citrique, moyennement résineux et légèrement herbeux avec des traces boisées et de toffee. Ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen-doux ainsi qu’une texture huileuse et aux notes résineuses. Goût moyennement amer de houblon fruité (marmelade, moyen d’agrumes, notes d’abricots), moyennement citrique, légèrement résineux et herbeux (une amertume présente en bouche toute la gorgée) accompagné de faibles traces boisées lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute très rapidement un goût de caramel toffee assez sucré et aux faibles notes rôties avec un léger goût de biscuits ainsi que des notes de sucre brun et de butterscotch puis en finale l’amertume reprend de l’ampleur en se faisant plus résineuse et plus herbeuse tout en étant accompagné de notes d’alcool réchauffantes. Post-goût long-moyen, moyennement amer de houblon fruité (marmelade), moyennement citrique, résineux et herbeux avec un résiduel assez sucré de malt (caramel bien présent) ainsi que des notes d’alcool.

Orangée/rosée et légèrement voilée, elle possède une mousse typique qui se résorbe lentement. Au nez, on est frappé de plein fouet par des houblons fruités qui semblent être fraîchement cueillis, qui frayent avec des malts caramélisés. Le sucre d’orge et les houblons floraux s’entremêlent en bouche avec une participation des malts. Texture huileuse, résineuse, qui fait bien glisser le liquide et laisse une belle empreinte. C’est un beau mélange. Je trouve que c’est loin du style, mais ô combien intéressant, à mon humble avis. (Embout. 02-2013)(561-070313)

Bottle - 750ml. Beautiful hazy amber body with a thin off-white frothy head. Rich, strong malty/hoppy aroma with sweet, spicy, and woody hints. Its robust, complex, sharp hoppy taste carries malty, brown sugar, spicy, fruity, and oaky notes. Ends with a long, warming bittersweet finish. Awesome Barley Wine!

Pours a clear amber orange with a small white head. Aroma is loads of sweet caramel and pine hops. Caramel from the malt. Taste is a big boozy, nicely hopped barley wine. Nicely complex with the caramel and toffee maltiness with the pine hop bitterness. The booziness of the alcohol comes through a little too much and stings a bit. Maybe this should sit but I’m worried about the great hop flavours changing.

Aroma: Smelling of sweet oranges, clementine peel.
Appearance: A clear amber colored beer. An off-white head with good lacing and good curtains.
Taste: Tasting sweet sponge cake, orange marmalade and bitter orange frosting.
Palate: Medium low carbonation, a sticky and oily texture. A big body with a slightly dry finish.
Overall: Tastes like a candid bitter orange peel glazed sponge cake. Very nice.

Bottle 750ml. Pours amber with almost no head. Aroma is of hospital waste container, fruits. Intense phenols (or well something like that), citrus, garbage juice. Grapefruits, alcohol. Taste is of fruits, cloying sweetness, alcohol, citrus. Loads of sugar. Palate: medium-full bodied. Overall: Cloyingly sweet. 101 IBU feels like no thing with all that sugar. Incredibly bad balance. The heavy hopping saves this one form instant drain pour and give it some positive aspect, but in like one or two months from now, I fear this would be completely undrinkable.

bottle from local IGA A: fruity (red fruits, citrus) yet It’s tropical, has some licorice / caramel and some piny notes. It smell so good. App: clear orange no head. T/P: full body finish is bitter and moderate long. sticky texture. O: Loved it. Sweeter than the usual american barleywine but I still think that it’s within style. Only word of advice is to share the bottle with a friend... it’s big !

UPDATED: APR 4, 2013 Bottle (750 ml). Thanks to Minderbinder for sharing this one. Unclear amber with almost no head. Aroma of resinous hops, phenols(?), grapefruit, menthol... not really appealing. Taste is heavily sweet (cloying) with phenol, resinous hops, grapefruit and low to moderate bitterness (the 101 IBU are hidden by the cloying sugar). Heavy body. Sticky. Complete lack of balance. Cloying sugar. Bof...

Ce vin d’orge a une couleur cuivrée, et une mousse quand même généreuse pour le style s’exhausse en la versant dans un verre tulipe. Chapeau à l’étiquette qui n’est pas avare d’informations. Belle présentation et conseils utiles. Très exhaustif. Bouquet très, très puissant d’épices, d’agrumes subtils, de fleur de rose, mais surtout de houblons floraux et résineux qui volent la vedette. En bouche, c’est surprenant. Un goût intense, houblonnée, explose ; des notes de sucre d’orge se présentent d’abord. On y décèle des pointes d’agrumes. Ananas et pamplemousses subtils. Puis, la finale est longue, amère ; le houblon résineux reste de longues secondes collé au palais - sans aucun doute, c’est pour les buveurs avertis! Bon produit, excellent barleywine que j’ai adoré partager. Certainement pas le genre de bière qu’on souhaite boire en quantité, car c’est très chargeant pour les papilles! Cheers!

UPDATED: APR 17, 2013 So far this year, it’s Québec’s #1 beer for me. It’s not very good looking; very hazy, with a colour that reminds me of garden soil (I’m partly colourblind though). It produces an aroma of american hops that never ends, with touches of citrus, citronella grass and pepper. Exciting! The flavors of resin, orange, mango and cinnamon complement the perfectly balanced sweet and bitter taste. You want to know how a brewer can get the most out of great hops? Try the American Barleywine. It’s an homage to great hops.
