Flasche - kurz vor MHD - Dunkelbraune, klare Farbe, wenig grober Schaum. Großartige Aromen von Karamell, Nüssen, Röstmalz und Dörrobst. Körper sehr leicht, fast wässrig. Gut zu trinken.

500ml bottle [Thanks to bartlebier for this Top 50 gem!]. Clear chestnut colour with copper glimmer and average, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Rich and intense, dark malty aroma, sweet-ish notes of malt lozenge and milk chocolate, hints of nuts and nougat, some toffee and caramel, a spicy, roasty dark malty touch as well. Taste is dry, slightly roasty dark malty, subtle remnant sweetness, hints of nuts, dark chocolate, some toffee, caramel, a leafy grassy hoppy touch of green hazelnut; lasting. minimally bitter, nutty finish. Very well balanced, superb drinkability - could as well be, if tasted blind, my favourite Brown Ale.

Gravity barrel during numerous sessions @ Brauerei Gradl in Nov. 2015:

Clear rusty-chestnut. Lathery foam exhibits stellar retention. Captivatingly malt-rich aromas of breadcrust, hazelnut and sassafras entice the olfactory along with pistachio- and buttermilk-like yeast, fallen leaves, minerals and an orangey fruitiness. Soft, fine, weightless carbonation. Stunningly dry, yet extraordinarily rich breadcrusty malt fuses with an earthy mixture of bitter pecan skin and fallen-leaf hoppiness. Sharply herbal and woody, but well-integrated, punch of hops lends a drying effect and resonates nicely with the prominent earthy flavors. Bracing minerals clutch the tongue and amplify the licoricey hops. Oodles of marzipan, nougat and unsweetened chocolate drip from the complex malt. Some coffee, cookie and burnt toffee buried in there as well. Envelope-pushing bitterness soaks up the saliva produced by the explosive malt and rich minerals. Melanoidins flourish and satiate in the sublimely malty, yet immaculately clean, finish as chewy-bitter hops and vivid minerals provide contrast and singularity. As unabashed malt and mineral bomb that gives the fullest expression of terroir. So lean and clean, and easily the finest water quality I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing! Multiple liters of this will purify one’s soul.

50cl bottle. Pours clear dark amber colour with a mid-sized most good lasting beige head. Aroma of mild roasted malt, caramel, nuts, mild hops. Taste of mild roasted malt, nuts, caramel, mild bitter hops, good Dunkles!

Draught @ Akkurat. Good balance of a sweet doughy maltiness and a herbal bitterness. It also has notes of orange and knäckebröd. Really fun and drinkable! One of the better dunkels I’ve had.

Courtesy of Jaghana. Bottle 50cl. Couleur ambrée sombre, légère mousse. Bon nez caramel, sucré, toasté. Gout caramel, un peu toasté et bien houblonné, note malt fumé. Corps moyen. Fin longue caramel et bonne amertume houblon. Pas mal

another great and rare contribution of bartlebier@pre-BKL-tasting, thanks a lot. Aromas of dried banana, wood, dark caramel brought up more intensely by taste, quite some roast, on an almost Porter-like creamy palate and a decent bitterness at the finish.

Bottle 50cl, a clear amber beer almost without head. Nose is on caramel and toasted caramel, well hppy dry feeling, chocolate, nice body very tasty, long caramel aftertaste and long bitterness.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2016 Gravity pours@source XII2015, bottles bb03/2016 and 5L minikeg. - Bref: This earthy, well-hopped Franconian Kellerbier tastes like the missing link between altbayrisch Dunkel and English-style bitter. - Pours a gorgeously rich, light auburn caramel with organically indented creamy beige foamcap. Aroma of margerine/buttered breadcrust, inviting fresh proteins and roast caramels. Flavourwise, a masterpiece in below-5% balance and earthy richness with a mineral edge: starts off bready and toasted, with hints of young chestnut, before an assertive hop bitterness takes over leading into a greenhop-bitter finish: "soggy pasture", wet grass, more young/green chestnut bitters and flower stems over dry caramels, then a distinct (rusty) iron and thaw water touch, as picked up on by earlier raters. - Particularly moreish in all forms, due to the nectar-like natural carbonation linking Franconian Keller with Real Ale, and high bitterness. - Hard to find in DE, yet worth the hike to the source to have this tapped by the gruffy questionmark of a senior brewer - or to the discerning bars in Sweden and Italy who impressively carry this on cask. (Prost to 3fourths and his beautiful photoblog biertravel.com for pointing me in the right direction.) #3000 // rerate 5L minikeg servings: develops sweetish mids like baked banana, then ties those short by finishing on a woody astringency like the best Alt, making you go for the next gravity pour. I believe this masterpiece of a beer has it all...
