(Draft: Liberator Brewing in Troutdale, OR) Okay, so this is an odd beer. It’s a dunkel that aspires to be a cherry lambic. Weird, to say the least. The nose is lightly roasty, but fairly tart and fruity. The weirdness continues in the flavor, where it’s pretty tart, with notes of sweet cherry and wood, but also some darker malts, perhaps a touch of roastiness, but the accent is clearly on the woody, tart, cherry flavor. Medium bodied, tart and pretty clean on the palate despite the tantalizing sweet flavor. Dark brown color, ruddy amber at the edges. Light tan head fades to a ring, leaving no lacing on the glass. I have no idea why they call this a dunkel, maybe it’s not supposed to taste so much like cherries at it’s just a weird batch? Regardless, at least with this glass, the wood and cherry flavor totally transform what could be a dunkel into a dark fruity beer. So ignoring the bizarre naming, it’s light and enjoyable.
