Nice dark color with a tan head that beckoned to be tried, which I did. Very chewy with a sugary, fruity tones. Finished with a strong alcohol backlash that will take you by surpirse. I enjoyed this with my sauage sampler.

(Draft: Liberator Brewing in Troutdale, OR) Much higher in alcohol than the typical offering in this style, but the alcohol in no way shows up in the flavor. Unfortunately, much of what I expect in an Oatmeal Stout doesn’t show up in this beer. It’s actually fairly tart, reminiscent of their off-the-wall cherry dunkel, and it makes you wonder if the dunkel was on the line previously and they didnt’t clean the lines properly. Oatmeal is pretty light overall, and frankly, so is the flavor. Possibly the lightest flavored and lamest oatmeal stout I’ve tasted. Dark, ruddy brown color. As expected by this point, the head fades so quickly and completely that I can’t even tell what color it is, so obviously retention and lacing are poor. Okay as beer goes, but pretty bad for an oatmeal stout.

Deep brown color. Thick and sweet licorice and candy sugar, sticky and cloying with molasses, but not much oatmeal being tasted. Strong fruit/cherries and wine flavor and aroma. Very interesting.

Very dark burgundy. Mild carbonation. Heavy sweetness (molasses and toffee) kind of takes the stage from the beginning, and it never really gives it up to anything else. Although, there were some nice notes of wood and whiskey that popped up here and there, which I enjoyed. But the milky sweetness was a little much for me.

Black color. Small head. Aroma is chocolate and toffee. A medium bodied oatmeal stout. Malts are roasted and very sweet. Lots of molasses, brown sugar, touches of whisky barrel. Seems a little lactic. Very smooth taste. This beer is missing the roasty malts are the chewyness of an oatmeal stout. Nice tasting beer but it seems more of an imperial porter than a stout. Alcohol is present. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

RBSG 2004: Clear ruby with no head. Bubble-gum and plum in the aroma, with a tiny bit of alcohol. Starts and ends sweet, full bodied with an oily texture.

(RBSG04) Clear, red-black body. Aroma is sweet, roasty, caramel. Taste is sweet, roasty/burnt, molasses, some cherry, chocolate. Alcohol noticeable. Medium-full body.

Tap. Milky-sweet and quite good at 9.5% ABV. Cherry and other misc. fruits in the flavor. Not so much of an oatmeal stout, but for an imperial, it’s a winnah.

Dark brown, slightly red, no carbonation. Chocolate and roasted malts. Raisins. Again overhopped. Lots of roasted malts. Too damned hoppy.

NABA ’04: Low carbonation, low head. Very roasty. Fruity and chocolate. Sweet roasted flavor with alcohol bite. Finishes astringent. Good, but needs a bit more carbonation to really round out.
