4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 5000 (4113) - Hardened Liver, USA - JUN 8, 2011
Bottle: Deep brown in color, burnt sugar hues, large foamy tannish head, with fairly nice lacing. Tart cherry on the nose, fresh cut oak as well. They call this a Porter, but my nose is telling me different. Not much in the way of roasted malts. Oddly enough, I get a dash of spearmint. Wow, thats like a damn Sour Ale. Very tart, bordering on sour. Fruity, yeah, in that Cherry sense. Certainly has an oak background. Seems spritzy on the tongue, but mellows out to a very smooth beer. For a Porter this has no real Porter qualities. I think if I had this blind, I would say Sour Ale as Pailhead mentioned. I am really impressed with this one. Dry finish, lingering tart immature cherries, with a soft oak background. Yeah, this is some tasty stuff! Thanks Kevin for the bottle!
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 ucusty (2670) - raleigh, North Carolina, USA - SEP 9, 2011
From a one liter swing-top bottle shared at the jackie o’s event. Dark pour with a very thin beige head. Aroma is roast, cherry, and oaky tannins. Vanilla, sour cherry and roast. Light acidity here from the cherries or something else? either way its working right now.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 flatmatt (776) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - JUN 15, 2011
From a one liter swing-top bottle. Pours black with just some off-white bubbles instead of a head. Oak and cherry aroma with some cocoa. Flavor is rather tart, cherry, with some roasty cocoa, some oak in the background, finishing on a cereal note. Flavors start out muddled, but become much more clear when it approaches room temperature. Not bad.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Pailhead (3449) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - MAY 2, 2011
Bottle: The aroma is a very nice combination of vanilla, cherries, chocolate, and oak. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small khaki head that quickly fades to a thick ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with light vanilla that lingers throughout. The finish has moderate sour cherry, light oak, and a touch of chocolate. The flavor is definitely more sour cherry while the nose is slightly more sweet cherry. In comparison to the regular version, this is more sour and the roastiness from the base porter is all but gone. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel. Overall, it’s very tasty and probably right on the border of what Ratebeer might consider a Sour Ale...at least flavor-wise.
