COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
My original records for this beer date back to a batch of home brew in June 2007. It was a beer called IPA Massacre. It was brewed three times under this moniker with minor tweaks along the way. The most significant tweak I made to the recipe was changing to use hops grown in Washington USA. Accordingly, in January 2011 the name was changed to Yakima Scarlet. There were no less than seven iterations of this beer brewed before releasing what you hold in your hands right now. I still don’t what style of beer it is, but I can tell you that it is hoppy and it is red.

500ml bottle from Zesty Edibles. Browny red in colour, nice head. Big hoppy taste with hints of dark roast and coffee. Lovely red ale as Liberty in NZ can only produce great beer. Another fine effort from Joe and Christina. My first Scarlet and it didn’t disappoint. Not easy to get here on the Sunshine Coast, but I’ll be hunting for more. Highly recommend.

Deep clear copper. Aroma is of sweet malt and hops. Flavour is sweet fruity hops some bitterness but not huge which is nice I don’t like it when the beer is overly syrupy and sweet.

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep copper, with a moderate off-white head, which lasts fairly well and leaves decent lacing. Resin, grapefruit and herbal hops notes sit over a base of toffee and nutty malt to create the aroma. Strong grapefruit and resin hops up front are tempered by mild berry notes. The resin becomes stronger leading into the mid-palate, where it mixes with toffee and buttered toast malt. Strong grapefruit and mild herbal hops in the finish give it a nice bitter kick at the end. This is a very enjoyable red ale, with a strong hops thread running through it.

From a 500ml bottle on 25/9/2013. Pours a slightly cloudy reddy amber with a medium head which dissipates quickly. The aroma features lots of fruity hops and heaps of toffee. The flavour is quite unusual with caramel and toffee malt, sweet dark and citrus fruit, some nuttiness, a bit of honey, and a firm bitterness with a bit of grapefruit in the mix. The body is quite full, with the texture quite slick, and the carbonation moderate. I wasn’t entirely convinced by this at the start, but it won me over by the finish. Very nice stuff.

Bottle from BlackHearts&Sparrows. Great balance. Aromas of caramel, dark fruit, and strawberries. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and very long length. Palate is creamy and full bodied. Brown with a frothy head.
