COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
My original records for this beer date back to a batch of home brew in June 2007. It was a beer called IPA Massacre. It was brewed three times under this moniker with minor tweaks along the way. The most significant tweak I made to the recipe was changing to use hops grown in Washington USA. Accordingly, in January 2011 the name was changed to Yakima Scarlet. There were no less than seven iterations of this beer brewed before releasing what you hold in your hands right now. I still donít what style of beer it is, but I can tell you that it is hoppy and it is red.

Like the prior reviewer - and the brewer himself, based on what is on the label - this is a hard to pin down beer. Which is one way of saying itís all over the place. Rich deep red, malty, sweet - almost sticky. But lots of bitter grassy hops and lingering aftertaste. But, I donít know, itís maybe trying a bit hard? Itís almost a great beer; almost *many* great beers, but it doesnít quite meld, I think.

American strong ale isnít my favourite style so a pleasant surprise to find this is more an IPA to my palate - no doubt about the quality from go to whoa - strong malt impact then super-hoppy thrust - herbal, piney at first then powerful apricot - lovely bitter finish - alcohol invisible - oh yeah, I like it.

From bottle in Belgian ale glass. Poured with frothy head, scarlet is an accurate moniker. The rich hops and malts feature from the nose through to the palate. A clean bitter finish to cut through the malty backbone. A very nice brew.

500mL bottle from Slowbeer Copper body, bit of haze, beige head is creamy, hangs around. Aroma packs a punch - spicy, dried leafy hop, notes of bitter citrus, papaya, guava with plenty of toasty, dark toffee malts . Full body, sticky, clingy, chewy, smooth carbonation. Palate bursts full of rich toasty caramel malts with punchy hop notes of tropical fruit, citrus & wood spice. Firm bitterness, long smooth finish. Really nice, seems bigger than it is!

This has a well rounded hoppiness, promising a complex taste. Creamy, almost yellow head. Citrus, herb & pine then a crunchy slightly sweet malt body. It went really well with steak.

Brilliant clear scarlet pour, with tight creamy beige head. Huge whack of fresh citrusy and piney hops in the aroma, with the caramel malt hiding in the shadows. The taste is a clear reflection of these aromas and is highly pleasant, but the real star is the body. Big, beautiful full body of an imperial stout, smooth on the tongue and just enough acidic pop to really enhance the lively hop bitterness. Really enjoyable beer with a lot of zing.

On tap at Brew on Quay, Auckland, August 2014. Clear copper with a small head. On the sweet side with caramel, fruit and light hops. An ok one.

Bottle from The Wine Emporium September 2013. Deep red colour makes for an interesting looking beer. Hoppy and malty all at the same time.

A simply amazing beer, appeals on all levels. Has a nice complex American style hop aroma that holds amazing interest. Then rolls onto the palate silkily with no edges save for a beautiful bitterness that doesnít quite coat the mouth but lets you know they added as many hops as perfectly needed to get the style they wanted. Itís like an IPA met a decent malt body, and they got along like a house on fire. The finish is awesome. I think every IPA lover and Pale Ale lover that can handle a beer with body, will like this beer.
