Hoppy Amber perfection. Hoppy sweet candy notes. Great bitter tastes excite the palates. Would be way higher if I liked the aroma more.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
500ml bottle at Prohibition in New Plymouth.
Hoppy aroma dominates.
Poured dark coppery amber with good head (so much the bottle foamed on opening).
Mild hoppy bitterness is followed by a lovely malt finish.
Nice one - more please.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2016-05-31. Dark red brown body, nice beige head and lace. 3+ Aroma of malt, touches of caramel may seem stronger due to the brew house being in operation here. Fruity muted melon and fruit. 6+ Flavour is malt forward, caramel touches, fruity hops follow. Green leafy hops, tropical fruit and melon. Average bodied palate, carbonation. Decent take on a hoppy red but is maltier than what Iím in the mood for. 7/3-4/7/3/14+ Bottle at Brothers, Auckland, NZ.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
500mL bottle, pours a dark orangey brown with a medium beige head. Aroma smells really yeasty and earthy, with earthy hops. Flavour is along the same lines, with a hugely earthy hop component and lots of dirty yeast. Doesnít seem fully developed or maybe Iíve got an older bottle (no discernible bottling date). Not bad, but not as good as the ratings suggest.

American strong ale isnít my favourite style so a pleasant surprise to find this is more an IPA to my palate - no doubt about the quality from go to whoa - strong malt impact then super-hoppy thrust - herbal, piney at first then powerful apricot - lovely bitter finish - alcohol invisible - oh yeah, I like it.

From bottle in Belgian ale glass. Poured with frothy head, scarlet is an accurate moniker. The rich hops and malts feature from the nose through to the palate. A clean bitter finish to cut through the malty backbone. A very nice brew.
