awaisanen (1100), Irvine, California, USA Jan 2, 2006 Updated: Sep 27, 2006Dark coffee colors with a roasted hazelnutty head. Slightly bitter espresso and heavily roasted malts dominate the nose and the palate. The finish is dry and slightly bitter with a touch of oak. CharlesDarwin (1315), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 25, 2005 Updated: Aug 12, 2007Original Rate Nov 25, 2005. 3.7. Pitch black pour with a large head of tan. Aroma of light luscious bourbon, coffee, pitch black chocolate. Flavor follows aroma with some dusky malt and earth, horse barn and oat, that mingle with a hot fresh blast of roasted coffee and caramel, very dry. Palate is cool and sweet, but finishes with a parching dry smack of oak and coffee grounds. Has fruit malts more like a Porter, but registers as Stout.
Re-Rate. August 10, 2007. 4.0. On tap at the brewpub. This tasting found the beer much more full in body, with a more incredible roast depth, supported by wonderful, acidic, earthy coffee, bright with freshness, piquant spice and glowing vanilla.
