awaisanen (1161), Irvine, California, USA Dec 23, 2006 On tap at the brewpub. Dark black, opaquely creamy pour with a tall layer of creamy tan head. Aromas of toasted oats, a hint of vanilla, and a wave of creamy chocolate greet the nostrils. Full bodied, silky carbonated mouthfeel that achieves a nitrogenated-esque creaminess without sacrificing the dead nose. Flavors of rich chocolate and roast balance themselves nicely with a subtle suggestion of fruity plum and vanilla bean. Nice, tasty offering. CharlesDarwin (1412), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 17, 2006 Updated: Oct 10, 2007Luscious ruby cherry fruit aroma, with almost some bourbon barrel character, real rich and refined, a hint of chocolate liquor, light notes of coffee. Pour of pitch black, with a currant gleam and a frothy, sweet cream head. Flavor is a touch thinner than I expect, yet nicely dry and yet still full bodied. Redolent with roasted oatmeal, bright coffee roast without the acidity and a background of distant charred dark fruits. Hop character minimal, yet roasted dryness and quality attentuation bring balance to this one. Very nice.
