kepano (239), Meudon, France Nov 30, 2005 There is a festive aura about this beer perhaps from unveiling the bottle of its delicate wrapping or popping the cork to release fragrant puffs of air. Something about fruits in beer bids for a joyous celebration. A cautious pour produces a fizzy beige head which dissipates to a light sheet covering the dark but reassuring red mahogany body. Raspberries always have a comforting odor to me, reminding of home and picking them in my grandmother’s garden. Like my own Proustian madeleines, the scent of this beer conjures such warm memories that may immensely amplify my appreciation of the simple liquid. The nose itself is of course dominated by the aroma of authentic fresh raspberries, not jam nor juice but the smell of a real raspberry bush. Sour cherries and rich brown sugar provide complexity and balance to the bouquet. The flavor is light and more beer-like than I expected, especially in comparison to Lindeman’s effort which felt syrupy and forced. Beneath the berries appear a soft citrus flavor not unlike ripe clementines. For my taste, this is by far the most enjoyable fruit beer I have had. Refreshing in the summer, merry in the winter, I think Liefmans has produced an excellent ale which I am excited to enjoy again.
jumpjet2k (94), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 2, 2009 Bottle. Pretty small but lingering head on a brown-red body. Aroma slightly tart and musty with a fruity sweetness. A clean lactic tartness blends well with the light sweetness of raspberries. A small mustiness complements. Not too shabby. It’s a little light on all of the flavors, though - I’d like a little more of everything. ChristianScheffel (3013), Odense, Denmark Jun 22, 2009 Clear red brown with small off-white head. Aroma of reaspberries with a slightly dusty funk. Medium sweet, but tart flavour of raspberries and caramel. Theis (3227), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jun 3, 2009 Bottle at Dæmningen - shared with Mette, Henning & Karen. Clear brown - offwhite head. Brown sugar, raspberries, rubber, bike-glue, roasted notes, syrup sweetness, light suorness. OK fresh summerbier. danielst (64), Vienna, Austria May 20, 2009 Surprisingly this has a rather dense, creamy to foamy off-white head, reddish-brown colour. The aroma comes close to that of wine mash with notes of fruits and grains. Flavours of sweet blackcurrant and raspberries (oh really?) with a nice, careful sourness. This remindes me of cider too, with the acidic and somewhat "green" taste of sorrel... Late late, veeery light bitterness, hardly noticeable. Not too sticky nor sweet to me - nice! DSG (1330), Tel Aviv, Israel May 7, 2009 Sample from a bottle brought by some guy from Moortgat to Ma’abarot beer festival. Red-colored. Sugary raspberries aroma. Sweet raspberries, sugar and light sourish oak. Medium-bodied, a bit sticky. trapez (576), Hilleroed, Denmark May 5, 2009 Bottle.Raspberry and candy aroma. Redbrown colour with small head. Sweet fruity raspberry flavour mixed with citrus. Mour sweet than sour. Acidity not very prominent. garthicus (1040), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 7, 2009 With many thanks to HogTownHarry. I think this may have been aged for 3 years. Appearance: Red brown with a practically non existent white head. Aroma: Wonderful raspberry and cherry, malt and some hops. Very nice and fruity. Flavour: Nice big raspberry flavour up front, acidic, sour, mildly carbonated with a medium body. Nice long champagne-esque raspberry finish. Lovely.
