BelgiskOlklub (397), Viby J, Denmark Aug 26, 2007 Updated: Aug 28, 2007Red-brown beer with a small white head. The beer has a lot of raisin and plum in the taste. A good balance between the sweet and the sour. It has a medium/full body, which is unmoral for the beer, and it has some sediment in the bottle - that’s more normal for Goudenband. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 25, 2007 Tons of sediment which I hate. Pretty darn drinkable. Not to sour. Good but won’t drink again. Just not my thing. Still though I can appreciate that this is good. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 20, 2007 When I untwisted the metal... the cork popped out... Does this mean that the beer is rotten? Either way I was not into the taste. Tastes very sour and does not have much character. Once again this may be rotten because this is my first flemish sour ale. I will have to revist this type. rsauermann (38), Arlington, Texas, USA Aug 19, 2007 My first venture into Flemish Browns. Definitely a different beer. malty, and tart, I could drink these back to back to back. No sourness though, was looking foward to it. davidflores99 (225), Long Beach, California, USA Aug 17, 2007 I had this while I was in the Netherlands, and what a great beer it is. Aroma was sweet and sour, good mix. Flavor was also a little bitter sweet and tangy with light carbonation. An exceptional brew! fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Aug 16, 2007 Sampled during the First Annual Stone Sour Fest. Dark reddish brown with a smallish head. Aromas of molassas and raisins. Sweet cherry and other sweet aromas too. Flavors were rather sweet as well with notes of horseblanket. Missed the sour in this sour ale. Or maybe it just blended so well. Either way, it was very good. mfuent1 (15), USA Aug 10, 2007 Came by this one at the recommendation of a friend who is the beer guru at a local wine/beer/spirits store. I told him I liked Chimay and he suggested this one. I found it nothing like a Chimay and so wasn’t enamored at first, but went back and got another one and really have grown to like it. I agree that the sourness, while initiallly offputting, really lends a distinctive character to this fine brew. RollinHard (750), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Aug 8, 2007 Pours a dark brown with red highlights, small lasting head and very murky body with floaties all over the place. Interesting aroma that is not as sour as I expected. There’s some caramel and brown sugar, vinous grapes, pears, light pinches of vinegar, mushrooms, and a light cheesy funk. Taste is surprisingly sweet, and very balanced. It’s got plenty of sweet caramel and brown sugar malt, plenty of cherry flavor, some toast, vinegar...very vinous, but very sweet. Just a deep deep flavor. A fair amound of wood too, I forgot to notice that earlier. Finishes with a surprisingly buttery earthy flavor (hops??) but it’s still a bit cloying and doesn’t dry out enough even if some dry earthy flavor remains behind. Feels full bodied for the style and very slick (which I guess is the norm.) and the alcohol is completely hidden. Anyway, I’m not the hugest fan of the style, but I loved this! Fascinating flavor, the sourness is a team player (not the feature), and it’s totally drinkable. I’m gonna buy some more tomorrow.
