Infinitely complex in aroma and flavor with notes of maltiness and tartness throughout. An unsurpassed old brown with the richness and complexity of a vintage wine.

Finally after all these years of staring at this bottle with the nice blue paper wrapper on the shelf, I decided pull the trigger. Dark leathery brown in color. Spicy fruit nose. Some apple and pear with cinnamon. Nice smooth sour tart tang with a velvety finish on the palate. Overall, a nice brew... glad I finally decided to pick it up.

Bottle. Brown with ruby, a thin foam. Aroma: red port wine, malt, fruit, dried raisins or dates, a little bit of caramel and toffee. Taste with acidity, fruity, malty, a mixture of cherries, grapes, plums, apples, warm, with a slight bitterness from a mixture of hops, alcohol and oak.

One of the great classics on the Belgian beer map and certainly in the ’Vlaams oud bruin’ style. Originally called IJzerenband, the name was changed in 1956. It fortunately survived till this day, but has changed shape every now and then; I once managed to get my hands on a vintage bottle still made by the ’original’ Liefmans, i.e. from before Riva took over in 1990, and it was a great old beer to taste, but I’m afraid I still lacked experience back then to fully understand it. The Riva version went up and down, with some batches being better than others, but in the years before Moortgat took over (2008), I remember the lactic acid component had been all but abandoned, resulting in a decent, but cliché beer, more a dubbel than a true oud bruin. Moortgat then saved the day and the present-day version has again that lactic, tart, yoghurty character which defines this ancient sour ale style. It bears a light beige, creamy head and has a deep, hazy bronze robe; apart from the yoghurt-like tartness, the flavour is also very fruity and estery, with hints of redcurrant, raisins, red apples, apricot, sherry, passionfruit and lots of caramel, but feeling natural and genuine; some woody, vanilla-like tannins are noticeable too. Tastes sweetish, estery, fruity, with a drying lactic acidity refreshing the palate; quite full-bodied, with woodiness in the finish as well as echoes of herbal hop bitterishness and a nicely warming alcohol effect. Crisp, ’honest’ and doubtlessly very important sour ale, luckily saved from oblivion and still one of those Belgians classicly fit for cellaring. I’m glad Moortgat kept the old blue paper wrap around the bottle as well, albeit somewhat restyled.

2015 bottle. Pours a dark brown with a garnet hue to it. An effervescent light tan head. A distinct caramel malt taste with dark grapes and raspberry. Slightly sweet and sour. A little chocolate at the end. Light-medium body, well carbonated, and a semi-dry finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

26.9.2014. Appearance is like cola. Sour aroma has berries and cherries. Taste is soursweet, cherries, plums, some notes like wine, some like homemade juice.
