COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Infinitely complex in aroma and flavor with notes of maltiness and tartness throughout. An unsurpassed old brown with the richness and complexity of a vintage wine.

Bottle at home, @10°C Deep red colour. Fine, fast disappearing head. Fruity sweet arome. Hints of yeast and berries. Flavour is sweet-sour with notes of rhubarb (only thing coming close). No hints of the high alcohol content recognizable. Did not know that it was rated this high on ratebeer but now comprehensible for me.

Small corked and wrapped bottle with a printed impression of someone’s autograph and all. Dark red/brown body. Aroma has simple tart cherries and some oxidised sweet malt mixed with hints of alcohol. Basic cherry/oxidised malt taste. What complexity? This is a very basic sour beer. I don’t know or care to know how good this beer was in the past, currently it rates "meh". Ratebeer seems to have an unhealthy fascination with anything related to sour. I wonder whether the highest rated potao chips on Ratebeer would have vinegar or sour cream in taste...

Dark brown. Minimal head. Aroma is intense and reminds of wine: loads of fruit (depending on the age of the beer there is variation: younger beers smell of strawberry and cherry; older ones of prunes, dates, figs and raisins); liquorice, chocolate, molasses, caramel, even Maggi and Lea&Perrins sauces. Sheer sourness, light body, no bitterness. Not for everyone; nevertheless it will please those who are capable to understand it. It’s a great beer.

The Goudenband Liefmans is a mammoth beer: A genuine ’must beer’. A brew to drink from time to time. I had a 10cl sample at the Zythos Beer Festival (Leuven, April 25th 2015), where I tried the 2004-batch. Very sweet and spiritful, but maybe a tat too ripe (I better had it from tap?). Accompanying the sweetness, there are many pleasant sour notes. Very nice.

Finally after all these years of staring at this bottle with the nice blue paper wrapper on the shelf, I decided pull the trigger. Dark leathery brown in color. Spicy fruit nose. Some apple and pear with cinnamon. Nice smooth sour tart tang with a velvety finish on the palate. Overall, a nice brew... glad I finally decided to pick it up.

Bottle. Brown with ruby, a thin foam. Aroma: red port wine, malt, fruit, dried raisins or dates, a little bit of caramel and toffee. Taste with acidity, fruity, malty, a mixture of cherries, grapes, plums, apples, warm, with a slight bitterness from a mixture of hops, alcohol and oak.
