Infinitely complex in aroma and flavor with notes of maltiness and tartness throughout. An unsurpassed old brown with the richness and complexity of a vintage wine.

Bottle. Poured a medium brown with some reddish undertones and a large almost cream colored rocky head that was mostly lasting and produced some fair lacing. The aroma was quite complex with a nutty dark grain malt, an herbal hop and a sweet earthy yeast with notes of cherries, apple, sweet dried fruit and a mild alcohol wine scent. It tasted sweet, malty and fruity with hints of cherries and dried dark fruit in the beginning then became very tart with a nice apple vinegar flavor at the finish. Mouthfeel was somewhere between light and medium in body with the texture being watery at first and finishing quite dry. The carbonation was lively and a little bubbly. Overall an appealing sweet-sour flavor mixed with an abundance of fruitiness which hid the somewhat high alcohol content.

Bottle from Sugaya. Nose of big sourish berries, some burnt malt, wood, and a touch of funk. Dark brown color, small tan head, which diminishes quickly. Light acidic initial, sweet ripe berries, thin cheesy notes, brown sugar. Thin-medium body, gentle carbonation, light astringency. Unexpectedly good and complex. A suprise from Liefmans.

75cl bottle from Erzbierschof. Pours a nice foamy head with small bubbles. The sourness is well contrasted by fruits and some sweetness, giving it an appealing taste. There is not more depth to it than that, however.

Bottle from 2000. 14 years old pulled out of Mike’s dusty cellar. Thanks! I was pretty drunk at this point in the night so I took no notes. From memory: Big sherry aroma with some cherries, light berries, and oak. Tastes a little papery but not bad. A nice mix of sherry, prune, berries, and Belgian yeast. Oldest beer I’ve had to date and it barely showed its age in this one.

Very fruity smell with sourness. Sadly the fruit overwhelms the sourness a bit too much. Still a nice beer, but don’t expect a sourbeer in a lambic style.

1996 bottle, pours deep and flat red-brown with a tart plummy nose. Palate is dry, fruity, lightly vinous, lightly sour in a plummy woody way, faintly herbal and bitter with just a hint of lemon, and both refreshing and very moreish.

Reddish-brown color with small head. Aroma is cherries, not aggressively sour, a bit sweet, blackcurrant. Taste is sweet fruity, malty-complex and boozy towards the end. The tartness is rather reserved. A good one, but also rather easily accessible.

Bottle: 2000 vintage, 14 years old. Big thanks to Mike. Cloudy copper with a very slight, gray foamy collar; really nice to see *any* sign of carbonation after this long. Aroma of caramel & toffee malts, faint papery oxidation, prune, timid vinous notes, & a moderate lacto-like tartness. Nice lemon bite on the palate up front; more tart than the nose indicated but still not overly sour. Light caramel malt sweetness for balance. Slightly tart prune & currant. Faint vinous grape with a touch of musty Belgian yeast in the finish. Oxidation has gotten a little cardboard in there, but still not so much considering the age. Perhaps over the hill just a bit, but still really fun to try.

Bottled. Dark brown with reddish hue. Creamy beige head, nice lace. Acidic raspberry aroma, sherry, loads of sweet dried fruits, vanilla and light toasted oak and candi sugar in the aroma. Maybe a hint of chocolate. Sweetish flavor at first with some syrupy sugar and acidic berries. Yeasty, slightly okay finish with fermented berry flavor. A hint of sourness when yeast are poured. Medium body, soft carbonation.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a minimal beige head. Aroma was sour with cherries, yeast and oak. Flavor of sour and tart cherries, yeast, vinegar, oak and had some acidity. Medium body, soft carbonation, sour tart finish.
