The ’basic’ Liefmans beer from which their other oud bruin products are made; typical deep chestnut colour and complex aroma revealing wine vinegar, raisins, passion fruit, yoghurt-like lactic acidity, hint of wood, caramel. All in all a mild, but elegant oud bruin, necessary to understand the Cuvée Brut or Goudenband, which are derived from it.

Ik ben al geen grote fan van oud bruin en dit was echt een typische oud bruin waar ik niet van hou

The body has a brownish or an old tarnished copper color that is nearly opaque. Near the sides of the glass there is a lot of visible carbonation streaming up to the top of the glass. This constant flow of tiny little bubbles helps to maintain a thick and foamy head, which is off white in color. Head retention is excellent and lacing is very good as well. The aroma has a tart and slightly sour fruity malty character with just a hint of citrus. Its flavor is pleasantly tart with a good solid malty base that is in good balance to its fruity tartness. A mildly tart oak flavor also adds another layer of complexity. The texture is refreshing with a lively carbonation and solid medium body that is quite drinkable. Overall this was very enjoyable.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2014 On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of red wine vinegar, malt vinegar and malts. Moderately sour and vinegary flavour, some sweetness and malts, no sign of hops. Watery body. Not really my thing.

On tap @ Henrik. This is a light cloudy deep dark brown one with her a slight red hue and a medium sized sidesticking big top. On the nose it’s as expected quite tart, woody and sour fruity. There is also a strong unpleasantly in the aroma that I’m having a hard time identifying. Almost a sulfur thing? Not sure. It has a really thin and light feeling in the mouth and the carbonation is soft but quite stingy. Woody tart with a ton of sour grains and public swimming pool. Bah, this was a but of a disappointment actually. It’s also quite sugary without being too sweet. Tart dry in the first is with traces of bitter bad nuts, old chocolate and mud. Well, no risk of me intentionally purchasing this again. 25.10.2013
