COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer was an experiment at the Lightning Brewery in crafting a high gravity farmhouse-style ale. We do experiments on occasion, maybe not as often as we would like, but we do. What can we say, we like Science and the Scientific Method. That means that we do not just do something to be different. We have an idea about the kind of beer we are trying to craft, think about what we know that relates to the beer style we are crafting, and then make an educated deduction by the application of our knowledge of beer and beer crafting. Electrostatic Ale is the Lightning version of a high gravity or Imperial-style farmhouse ale. We used imported “Pilsnermalt” and malted wheat to make the wort and then added a modest amount of bittering hops to allow further malt perception. We finished the brewing with some spicy hops just to add a bit of hop aroma. Finally, we fermented with a particularly “wild” strain of yeast to add some additional spice to the finished beer. We named the beer according to our now standard method that uses words associated with weather phenomena or more specifically lightning. It is important to note that lightning is made up of electrical current or electrostatic charge that suddenly starts to move and forms a lightning bolt. We thought that what makes up lightning, electrostatic charge, was a good starting point for a beer name. Electrostatic Ale is a big beer within this particular style. It finished stronger in maltyness, slightly sour from the wheat, and lighter in hops than commonly made ales. We found this beer worked out better than our expectations. That is the serendipity of Science: Experiments can work. Electrostatic Ale finished at a remarkably high 10% ABV, but with a smoothness that well balances the malt, hop, and fermentation flavors. This is a big and truly Imperial beer. Try it; just make sure you watch out for sparks!

Bottle. Pours a very hazy amber color with almost no head on it. Nose has some citrus in there with a little bit of that "wild" smell, but not an overpowering smell at all. Taste is slightly sour up front with a bit of a sweet finish with some of the wheaty elements of it coming through. Feels a bit heavy and rather carbonated.

Pours a slightly hazy gold with a thick white head. Aroma has sweet notes...candy sugar, honey, and tropical fruits. Flavor is tropical fruits and boozy...wheaty and candy sugar. Mouthfeel is medium/full and the finish is boozy/bitter fruit rind and warming.

Got sent up a gift pack of North County San Diego brews. This was one. Very hazy pour, little head, no real lacing. Somewhat flat. Very banana, which actually ain’t too bad. Finished fairly clean with small amounts of pencil lead and apricot.

No way that this is the style listed. Dark murky honey pour with a sizable eggshell head. Caramel, toffee, yeast, candied citrus, orange peel, and black pepper. Too heavy. Definitely not a Saison...but still tasty and drinkable. Heavy but enjoyable.

Honestly, this seemed more like a Tripel than a Saison. A little heavy, spicy, and fillinf. Pretty yeasty, as well, plus a lot of fruity notes, like apple and pears. A bit boozy as it warms.

A - Pours a hazy golden-orange with a finger off-white head. The head fades down very slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of sweet grainy and pilsner malts with Belgian yeast, banana, spices, lemon zest, and bit of booze. T - Starts off with a mix of sweet grainy and pilsner malts with some lemon zest citrus hops and some coriander. Through the middle, some more Belgian yeast flavor comes through with some banana, clove, and more coriander. The finish is a mix of Belgian yeast, coriander, clove, spices, sweet grainy malts, lemon zest, and a touch of booze. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet, spicy, and estery finish. D - Very drinkable. Nice Bière de Garde. Good balance of yeast flavors and body and malts.

Enjoyed on draft at Stone Brewing in California. Poured an amber with active carbonation and a nice lacy head that clung to the glass. Smell was sweet and sour with a hint of hops. The taste was a perfect marriage between a saison and an IPA; funky flavors with a bit of wet and juicy California hops. I picked this beer primarily for the name, and also because I enjoy saisons, but I am glad I took the chance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice tart smell, like a sour, and a bit floral. It has a huge body and is massively effervescent. Tastes like it smells...a huge, alcoholic, tart imp. saison. Really fucking good!

22oz bottle from Johncy’s Liquor Store in North Liberty, IA. Pours a cloudy, dull orange-gold colored body with a two finger-width, dense, frothy and foamy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is fairly sweet with some bigger, bready pils malts with some melon fruits, orange, honey, a light coriander spice, and caramel. Flavor is similar. Pretty sweet with some honey and a bigger, bready pils malt. Some yeasty spicing with a light coriander phenol, melon, and tropical fruitiness before the spicing grows a bit and this finishes fairly sweet, but not cloying with a moderate yeasty spice and light grassy bitterness. A bigger wheat malt comes in during a fairly lengthy aftertaste following a medium-full, moderately lively carbonation. Overall, this isn’t bad at all, but I’m just not digging the imperial saison. Not overly cloying, but pretty sweet without a lot of complexity due to the size. A decent yeasty spice and fruitiness, but not really my kind of beer. Eh...
