COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the original beers made by the brewery was Fair Weather Pale Ale. When the brewery was an unknown entity we had a really hard time selling this beer. It is a beer crafted after classic UK and US Colonial ales: Pale, malty, plenty of yeast character, limited hop character, and easy drinking. Itís important to remember that ales were seen as a beverage safe to drink in times when cities were crowded, sanitization was poor, and wells were shallow and open. This style of beer is very different from what is now seen as the classic West Coast microbrewery pale ale. To truly enjoy this beer, first pour between 1/2 and 3/4 of a glass (if you love more foam, pour down the middle. For less foam, sneak the beer down the side of the glass). Now look at the beer and take a look smell of the aromas. Note the pale, clear, with a moderate, but persistent head. Take a sip along with a deep inhale of the aromas and the first perception is a smooth creaminess of malt flavor finished by a balanced bitterness. It is not surprising that this beer is a hit with our audiences that truly give it a careful try. Like many Lightning beers, you have to experience Fair Weather Pale Ale and then ponder its appearance, aromas, and flavors. It may take a while to pull them apart to think of where they come from. Just think yeast fermenting malt with some hops added for balance. I am sure you will appreciate the hand-crafted appeal of Fair Weather Pale Ale.

On tap at the brewery. It poured a light orange color with a small white head. The aroma was of grains, light fruits and bubblegum. The taste was of bread, grassy hops and light fruits. Good stuff.

>> Clear deep golden, webby white lacing. Funky armpit nose, Berliner weisse toilet and sour mash. Taste is harsher chemical, oh god, more armpit and earwax. Bleh.

Tiny sampler. Ok brew, but somewhat lacking for me. Decent golden hue. Aroma not too strong with hops or malts. Sweet malt flavor with not too much in the way of hop bitterness on my palate. Livelier carbonation, ok finish. A little too strong to be a true session beer, yet not big enough for that "wow" factor.

Bottle. Amber with a tall, frothy white head. Aroma is rather tame floral hops and caramel malt. Light cereal grains as well. Taste is soft hops, faint fruit notes, grains, malt notes, and toffee. Body is medium with a soft, creamy carbonation. Finishes with more floral hops, soft fruit notes, grains and toffee.

Aroma is fresh yeast and malts. The flavor is malts, fruit and a good hop bite.

Bottle. Pours with a mostly clear, pale golden-peachy hued body with a medium large and lasting, eggshell white head that leaves good lace. Aromas are malty, medium grassy, light sulfur, floral, earthy, very light hint of bubblegum, medium esters, toasted malt, lightly woodsy hops. Flavors are of marmalade, ice tea, lightly bready, crystal malt, medium floral, medium bitter, grassy, earthy, mild citrus. Medium to medium full carbonation. Somewhat dry despite a strong malt character. A little bit of an alcohol character towards the finish.

Pitcher with Bartzilla at Hamburger factory. Not a bad Pale Ale. Pretty standard, some nice hop spice, with a good balance between the hops and malt. Extremely easy to drink. A nice summer beer.

Taster at the brewery in Poway. Pours a slightly hazy orange body with a finger-width, off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is grainy and bready with a deeper and crisper hop. A mix of citrus and melons with a touch of honey sweetness. Flavor is similar with a bit of yeast spice to go along with the balanced flavor. Dry finish with a spicy malt aftertaste. Full bodied and smooth. Overall, the brewer said this was supposed to be an English style pale ale, so I didnít expect it to be over the top. Not bad for the style at all.
