Commercial Description:
Old Tempest Ale is Lightning Brewery’s Winter Seasonal beer. This beer is a classic “Winter Warmer” or a beer that has an alcohol level that causes a “warming” feeling on sipping and drinking. This is an Old Ale or Strong Ale made in the tradition of UK brewers for centuries. We have used strictly “earthy” types of UK malted barley, UK strains of “grassy” flavoring and aroma hops, and our house strain of British Ale yeast in brewing and fermenting this beer. Also note the slight haze we have retained in the beer. That is because we avoid filtration, a process that can remove some of the complex flavors that make a big, malty beer more enjoyable. It is simply settled in the fermentation tank for months and then directly packaged for added flavor. Extensive aging is an investment for the Brewery in terms of tank space and at the same time an added value for enjoyment.

Bomber @ The Linkery. Overall this was interesting, I liked it overall but it was pretty sweet, and I don’t know if I liked it a lot or not. It was tasty and I’m glad to see more old Ales coming out of SD.

Pours a hazy orange color with a thin, white head. Aroma of lightly sweet caramel malt and some fruity esters with a mild grassy floral hop character. Body starts lightly sweet and caramely with a touch of earthy bittering hop balance with lightly tart notes toward the finish. Fairly interesting beer, but I’d prefer it without the tart character.

Pours a beautiful yellow orange color that is fairly cloudy – with a below average head, and below average lacing and slightly under carbonated. Smells of very strong heavy yeast and floral hops First taste is very smooth. A nice balance here with the hops, malt and yeast. Finishes very well with a lovely bitter after taste.

Light colored, sweet all over, with a bit of a grassy hoppy presence. The whole flavor profile was overlaid upon too much honey. Basic beer, not objectionable but not that good. Or I wasn’t in the mood...

Darker amber color. Aroma is molasses, caramel, earth, somewhat fruity. Medium to full body, fairly sticky. Not really to my preference.

Red-orange pour with a huge off white head. Strong malt aroma with some pickle, strawberry, cherry, and hop underneath. flavor is upfront sweet syrupy (crystal?) malt, caramel, fruit, spice, and a bit of hops. Finishes with a good amount of sweetness, nice carbonation.

Bottle. Pours orange red body with a mild lacing white head. Aroma is apple, caramel, sweet malt, and some etoh. Flavor is that nice tingling from the co2. decent.
