4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted on tap at the Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival 12/6/2008. This old ale pours a medium orange gold color form the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet with lots of orange and orange peel. A medium bodied old ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, with touch or orange. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Very smooth tasting. Nice slightly sweet finish. The alcohol is nicely hidden. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle purchased at O’Brien’s.
Appearance is dark orange/ruby red hue, thin off-white head mostly retains, light lacing on the glass.
Smell is syrupy sweet fruits (pears, peaches, raisins), cherries, some oaky wood, honey, and caramel malts.
Taste is initially dominated by caramel malts and a range of fruit flavors (pears and raisins mostly), some sour and tart tones, opens to floral hops and spices, some wood, finishes with sweet malt.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick semi-viscous texture, moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is moderate, a light and sweet version of the Old Ale style, wide range of fruits, low alcohol presence, i was quite pleased as this was my first beer from Lightning, looking forward to more from this brewery.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very malty and vinous in the aroma while the appearance is medium amber and relatively clear. Pretty good old ale, not the greatest but has only a few faults.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ Hamiltons. Nice golden color. Aroma is an interesting mix of vanilla, spices and belgian yeast. Flavor is much of the same. I thought this tasted alot like a Belgian Triple. Very sweet. Definitely a sipper. I would like to see this in bottles because it would be interesting to see how this one tastes after a couple of years to mellow.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a one finger off-white head. The aroma is a bit tough to describe; perhaps plums, spiced oranges, caramel, and some murky earthiness. The flavor is more straightforward; sweet malts, vanilla, strawberries, and fresh cherries. The hops are well integrated as is the alcohol. The mouthfeel is light and silky smooth. The finish is long with sour cherries, and a bit of astringency. Overall: this is a very interesting ale that I am sure will remain interesting again and again. Recommended
