Commercial Description:
This is the Lightning take on a smooth and freshening German style unfiltered wheat beer. The name hefeweizen means literally yeast (hefe) and white (weizen) beer. To be called a hefeweizen in Germany, the grain bill must have at least 50% malted wheat. This makes the process harder, but also makes for a smooth-tasting beer. We use 60% white wheat malt in our hefeweizen with the balance of the grain bill from imported “pilsnermalt.” We further encourage our Thunderweizen Ale to have a thirst-quenching finish by adding an amount of our own naturally produced lactic acid, and then smooth the beer with low temperature fermentation and cold storage prior to release.

On tap at Churchill’s in San Marcos, CA--Bright orange-yellow body with a great fluffy white head. Great looking beer! Bavarian, nutty, crisp, banana-clove nose. Great wheat presence. I really liked this beer!

On tap @ O’Brien’s San Diego. Nose was very sweet and yeasty. Clove spice, banana, and citrus were present. Flavor was much like the nose, very sweet and yeasty. Not my cup of tea but, I can appreciate a good quality brew when I taste one.....nice.

Draft at Stone Brewery. Aroma of banana and yeast. The taste was similar with some citrus also; a little more like a white beer than a hefeweizen.

Rerate; had this the second time at San Diego Brewing Co. Liked it just a bit more; upped from 3.5 to 3.7(On tap at Stone; new to this brewery. Flavor and aroma were both solid, probably above average for the style. Elements of banana, yeast, clove and citrus. Good palate; nice and easy drinking)

On tap at Stone. Slightly hazy yellow color, aroma of tobacco and banana, sweet malty banana flavor and a yeasty belgian character in the finish.

A clovey aroma on top of a cloudy yellowish orange beer. Also slightly fruity. Flavor is clove, sweet bannana, and a little citrus. Drinkable and thirst quenching. Pleasant.

On tap @ Hamilton’s. A pretty solid rendition of the classic thick, sludgy, cloudy hefe. Strong hints of banana and cloves that goes down really smooth. I was pretty faded when I drank this, but it was good enough to leave more than just a vague recollection with me. I’d drink this again.

Pours with a slightly cloudy, yellow body topped by a thin head with some lacing. It’s sweet yet slighlty sour with notes of banana and clove as well as a touch of citrus. A very nice hefeweizen. Light bodied, crisp and dry.
