JoeM500 (1877), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA Oct 28, 2003 Cask: Light brown pint with oily ring of white around the edge of the glass. Faint malty nose is sweet and slightly toasty. Sweet on the lips, toasty in the throat, some hops even fight for some attention at the finish. Wonderful surprise here. A soft tasty Oktoberfest from the cask... ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Oct 28, 2003 On tap at Lily's. Another example of an extra dark red Oktober. Mostly clear. Almost chestnut brown, some slight yellow head. Smell is tart and lightly grainy.
Begins with a big hops punch that is moderately astringent. Body is medium-light and is a tad harsh. As it warms, the finish demonstrates some of the good fluffy/creamy texture that I enjoy in this style. Quite a bit of carbonation. The alcohol is too apparent, and there is no where near as much malt as there needs to be to balance the bitter hops and alcohol. Very tart, moderately citric, lightly bitter towards the finish. Really wanted to try this on cask, but they were out.
