3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draught at The Malthouse, Wellington. Hazy amber. Yeasty, hoppy orange aroma. Medium bodied with clean mouthfeel. There’s some odd notes of curacao and plenty of citrus. An unusally yeasty, witbier like pale ale.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Haz rich golden colour. Some strange aroma hops in here, a bit citrusy and a bit spicy, but there’s also a bit of pissy (PoRingwoody) aroma as well. Decent body, some diacetyl and a bit of oxidized dusty notes. I’m not sure if this beer has been mishandled, but every other beer I had at this bar was also a bit off. It’s packed though so the turnover should be reasonable. Flavour is a bit spicy with some buttery caramel. Lingering hop bitterness, but too timid for something called Hopsmacker. As it warms, some of the rougher edges seem to round off, but still sub-par.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
An unclear orange beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma is sweet hoppy with light notes of rotten fruit, and peach, as well as hints of coriander. The flavor is slightly dusty with notes of coriander. To me this is more Belgian than English.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Hazy golden body, thin white head. Sharp and unbalanced aroma of hop, fruit and herb with grassy hints. Burned hay flavor, some fruityness. Rancid and unbalanced.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Hazy orange. Grape aroma. I can’t taste the Kiwi. Citrus and other fruity notes are clearly present in this beer. An inoffensive beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pint poured from Galbraiths Ale House. Appearance is a cloudy orange with a medium sized head. A very citrus aroma, hints of sweetness as well. Very bitter and flowery in the mouth, the citrus is strong in flavour as well.

Bottle brought back from Regional Wines by my housemate. Ugh. Completely ruined by NZ Saaz in my opinion. It will never be my favourite hop variety, but there are some beers which manage to use NZ Saaz in a nice, subtle way (Emerson’s Pils for example) and then there are beers like this where the polystyrene-coconut monster absolutely grabs you by the throat and beats your tongue to death. In this case it is made doubly worse because it is an otherwise very good beer - replace the NZ Saaz with just about any other variety and this would be pushing a 4 rating I’d say. Anyway it’s a nice clear amber colour with good head retention. Tinned tropical fruit (mango & pineapple specifically) aroma in amongst the polystyrene and coconut. Heaps of prickly hop flavour and a nice big bitterness, though it’s a bit rough. Malt is really only there to balance out the hops. What a shame. Thanks Rob.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cloudy dark straw colour with medium creamy white head. big hoppy aroma. It is like and English bitter but has a flowery hoppy taste and follows through with mild bitterness.
