Commercial Description:
Lindemans Cassis is a lambic made from local barley, unmalted wheat, and wild yeast. After spontaneous fermentation the lambic is aged in oak. Black currants are added creating a secondary fermentation and yielding an ale of exceptional flavor and complexity.

Courtesy of Pailhead. Pours dark ruby/purple, with light purple foam. Aroma is dirty, musty, stale water smell. Flavor has alot of vinegar and not much fruit at all. Aroma kills the score for sure.

Bottled: Very red coloured. Has a very reddish dense head. Loads of blackcurrents in the nose. Sweetness with a nice sour twist is present. Flavour is quite complex, though the berries are dominating again. There is a balanced sour sweetness. Is quite refreshing and full bodied. Ends on a mainly sweet fruity note, but again the sourness is balancing the sweetness quite good. Nice one.

Looks a lot like slightly carbonated grape juice. Nose is dark berries and hints of yeast. After mellowing, the flavor is a nice mellow, dark berry sweetness with wheat beer characteristics. Pretty good.

Very potent, blackberry, raspberry aroma, sharp almost medicinal taste at first, but it calms down still tastes like blackberry but eventually settles into a black currant taste. Doesn’t have that nice cask aged taste of the Kriek and Peche, but still sweet , soft and satisfying.

Purple and grape juice like. Looks beautiful in my Chimay goblet. Some sourness and some acidity. Very bubbly and nice feeling in the mouth. Not as divine as their framboise, but a decent drink. A good intro to the style to people that don?t know beer is anything else but BMC. The prices kill with all lambics, so I couldn?t get addicted.

I was first introduced to the joys of cassis about four years ago, when I went to my boss’ house outside Oxford and he poured pre-dinner cocktails of white wine and creme de cassis. It was most interesting. It may be the memories of that eye-opening experience, but I rather enjoy the cassis flavor here, which has veins of grape juice and blackberry preserves. There is a bit of sourness to it, but who are we kidding, this isn’t "lambic" in the classic/traditional vein. Still, there are things to like here. For one, the color. Wow--purple, with as purple of a head as you’ll find in any liquid. I’m getting visions of Barney liquified in my glass. The aroma has that brash hit of cassis as well. I was surprised, that it wasn’t as sweet as I would have thought; there is a stickiness, but at the same time it isn’t sweet to me in an artificial way. Overall this was a rather pleasing drink--taken purely hedonistically, because if you’re high-minded about thinking of yourself as a "beer drinker" you may have a hard time admitting this to your world.
