A golden hue sets off the wonderful almost champagne like taste.

Enjoyed from a 750ml bottle in a stemless wine glass. The beer pours a straw-colored yellow/golden hue, with an ample white head. The nose shows decided Brettanomyces character, along with a less aggressive level of acidity. As the sample opens up, a musty note also comes through, perhaps from the corked packaging. Together, the combination is utter and absolutely pleasing. The palate shows a lactic tart note up front, followed by some pleasing grassy/hay/farmhouse Brett character, and an absolutely bone-dry finish. The melange of pleasing flavors and aromas is outstanding. Carbonation is assertive, but not overly so, supporting the aromas and flavors, rather than detracting from them. The finish is nicely tart, leathery, and dry. Overall, an outstanding example of the style, even if it is widely available.

For novices to the Gueuze Lambic style (like me), Lindemans Cuvee Rene is an excellent place to start. It’s relatively inexpensive, fairly easy to find, and celebrated for its quality (gotta love those Belgians). Body is yellow-gold with a short-lived, fizzy head. Aromas are enticing in ways that are strictly reserved for aged cheese and unusual beers such as this one. Expect funky, musty yeast, sour apple, acidic lemon, leather, horseblanket, and burnt rubber. To put it one way, the aroma is odd but classy. Actually, "odd but classy" would be a good way to describe Cuvee Rene and the Gueuze Lambic style in general. Taste is predictably sour with notes of vinegar, tart apple, citrusy lemon, and barnyard flavors. The almost-vinous fruit flavors pair surprisingly well with the dank yeast character. The spritzy carbonation, acidic taste, and low ABV give this Gueuze a pleasant, refreshing mouthfeel. Unusual but intriguing. I’m hoping that Cuvee Rene will be one of the many sour beers I get to try during my lifetime.

Bottle. A- Citrus, barnyard, funky, musty, plastic, grassy. A- Orange brown color, cloudy liquid, white head. T- Lemons, apples, funky, grease, slightly sweet, sour, tart. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, lingering finish. O- My first gueuze. It was an experience alright. The sour and tartness was very upfront. As weird as it sounds, this beer reminded me of the smells and whatnot you get when walking into a auto shop like NAPA or something. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is a style I’ll have to grow into for sure.

What a perfect brew to drink in the sweltering heat of Canada day. 2 years of age on this bottle seems to have done it some good. Aromas of sour dough, barnyard, leather, and a bit of musty basement. The hazy orange body seems quite lively with the bubbles constantly floating to join the white cap at the top of the beer. The taste is very sour. Citrus sourness backed up by a touch of breadiness from the malt. There is some barnyard and leather in the flavour as well. Quite funky. Just the right amount of carbonation to be lively on the tongue without detracting from the flavours and it leaves a sour funky aftertaste in the mouth.

Strong sour aroma, lot of fruits (especially apples and lemon), champagne and belgian aromas. Taste is also very sour, funky, like champagne. Very refreshing.

Bottle - Vintage 2004 - Juicy apples. Clear gold with no head. Tart apples with a bit if sourness. Very different beast, almost cider now.

Apfelsaftlook. Geruch nach Zitrus, Hefe, Apfel. Am Gaumen sauer, Apfel, leicht herb mit schöner Kohlensäure. Trocken im Abgang. Interessant.

Aroma of sour funk. Very sour at first but then its balanced very well at the end with bread, superb, dry, drinkable finish. Excellent.

Bottle, 375 ml. Pours cloudy light amber with around two fingers of very lively and soapy head, which dissipates after a while. Lot of cheesy yeast on the nose, with some strong fruity notes including grapes, very sour varieties of apple (resulting in an aroma that’s a mixture of cider and champagne) and some citrus. Grassy and floral notes are also present. Taste is very sour with an exceptionally dry finish, consisting mostly of citrus and apple, with a duller aftertaste of cheese and yeast. Very, very sharp, an effect amplified by the high carbonation which leaves the tounge with a slight tingle. By no means smooth and easily drinkable but provides a significant warmth for only a 5.5%. This is my introduction to Gueuze lambics and I’m not certain if it’s quite my thing yet, but this is most certainly a well made beer.

Got at bottle shop, this is the most phenomenal brew I have had, sour dough with hint of rye, basement background and sour beyond sour but with the backup of the yeast breadlines. The balance was unreal. Buy it all d time.
