Autumn gold in color, smells like champagne half way across the room. Little head. Very sweet, almost excessively so, see MDmullet’s comments above. Slighty tart, green apples, some wheat. A joy to drink.

I’ve been waiting a while to get my hands on my first gueuze sample, and I found this at Sam’s in Chicago. The aroma and flavor profile were similar to what I expected, but it seems somewhat reserved. I expected a good measure of dryness, but this one seems like it is sweetened with sugar? Regardless, I can’t wait to explore the style.

Off white head the fades quickly. fruity musty aroma. This has a super sour flavor. Its great - highly carbonated.

Beautiful, clear amber color, with practically no head. A mind-blowing nose: champagne, tennis shoes, blackberries, yeast, roses... Has a tart, sweet flavor, with notes of raspberries and pomegranates.

Haven’t had many lambics yet, but this has been my favorite so far. More cidery than winey, a plus in my book.

My first gueuze. Wow. Big, sour kick in the aroma. Color was vaguely hefe-looking, a cloudy deep blonde. Incredible explosion of different flavors, with sugary sweetness, citrus, lemon, and a big finish of sour apple. Very pleasing sensation drinking this one, all in all excellent.

UPDATED: MAR 23, 2003 Mar 02: 1999? bottle. Nice apple-wine sort of color with little head; nose is VERY sour, unpleasant at first but it grows on you. Flavor also quite pucker-inducing, sour-apple/lemon seems the best way to describe it. Very much in keeping with the brewer's fruit lambics; very nice finish and body. Not my favorite exactly, but I'm still getting used to the style. A quality product in any case.

Mar 03: After several more gueuzes, an unblended lambic, and loads of sour ales of various types, this seems a bit more simple and not as impressive; and not nearly as sour as it did a year ago. But even a "mediocre" gueuze is still better than most beers out there!

Smelled like champagne in the bottle. The first sips had a strong apple flavor, consistent with the nose after pour. There is definitely a champagne-like character to this (albeit with sour apple), although it doesn’t have the aggressive carbonation of some light-colored Belgians (say, Corsendonk Pale). It does have an interesting woodiness. All in all, not as scary as I had feared (I had never tried a non-fruit lambic), but, considering the cash you have to put out for this, I’d spend it on a Belgian Strong Ale.

Seeing as how their fruit beers are all excessively sweet, I’d like to try a different gueuze to see if that goes for all of Lindemans’ product range. This was, in fact, very sweet. This was, however, balanced by the nice sourness and funk.
