Russian Imperial Stout brewed with American Amarillo hops.

Deep opaque black color, small brown head. Licorice and coffee in the nose. Medium-bodied. Coffeish, dark malts, some cough syrup like notes. Some Mikkeller Black -like rubbery notes. Interesting.

Aroma has coffee, cocoa and some licorice. Flavour is dry and somewhat fruity with well roasted malt, some coffee, salty licorice and vanilla. Too salty and burned but not bad still.

750 ml bottle @ vPBF 2012.
Pours a black colour with a beigeish head. Aroma of toasted malts, floral hops and tart bilberries. Flavour of roasted malts, tart bilberries, chocolate, nuts and strong American hops. Some perfumic notes as well. Medium bodied, hard carbonation and a sour, berryish, malty finish with the same perfumic notes as I mentioned before. Something’s definitely off here.

750ml bottle from Bieresgourmet @ vPBF

Pours pitch black with a small foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, hints of fruits, chocolate and coffee. Taste is roasty with notes of grassy and fruity hops, chocolate and coffee. Bitter and roasty finish with hints of fruitiness. Okay, quite roasty and surprisingly fruity for an imperial stout.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2012 Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker nr Gent, Belgium drank in a field at Cropredy Festival, Saturday 11th August 2012 Pours black with light beige head, really foamy head. Nutty but with a lovely softness, gloriously understated and the sort of beer you want to remain undiscovered. Love this, good roasty stout but with a pleasant hoppiness. Superb. 750ml from IPB.
Appearance : Deep black medium foamy creamy head. Some lacing.
Aroma : Caramel malt with coffee and chocolate. Light yeasty notes maybe. Light hops.
Taste : Yeasty and caramel malt. Roasted notes with chocolate and coffee. Slightly resinous finish with more coffee and caramel malt.
Overall : Interesting. Slightly thin for an RIS but at 8% that was to be expected and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Quite a lot of coffee with some caramel showing here and there. A bit too much caramel for the style IMHO. Overall not a bad beer but not such a good example of the style either. Nice coffee and roasty persistent finish.
