UPDATED: JUN 24, 2007 June 2007. Draft at the brewpub. Very dark brown body with a small tan head. (3+) Sweet dark malt aroma with mild roast and light notes of watery coffee. (7+) Sweet roasty malt flavour with varying notes of mocha and dark bitter chocolate, muted toffee and an interesting melange of all of these that lingers in the aftertaste. (7+) Average palate could be more robust but is fitting for the English style. This was in great shape today - very nice. 7+/3+/7+/3/15-16 - 3.7
Feb 2004 re-rate, Dark ruby brown with a nice beige head. Malty slightly fruity flavour with a bit of roasty mocha. Lighter bodied than expected but still a nice mouth feel. Not much aroma which was surprising. Probably their best beer. 5/4/7/3/14 - 3.3
Jan 2001: Had this on it’s own and in the Beer Float. Nice dark brown ale. Fairly sweet and malty. This was my favourite of their beers.

On tap at the restaurant. A deep dark brown. Not much aroma to speak of. Taste is nicely balanced - smooth, creamy, and roasty. Definitely my favourite of their brews.

On tap at the brewpub, dark brown-copper color, with a creamy beige head, mild honeyed toasted, caramelized, roasted malt nose with some faint dark dried fruit accents of rainsins, figs, dates and some cookie dough, mild brown chocoalte notes in the aroma follows through a medium-bodied palate with a sweet biscuity, toasty, roasted malt character, with a mild coffeeish flavour, and some toffee, cookie dough undertones, leading towards a toasty, fruity, raisiny, faint roasty bitterness finish. This is more balanced beer of all their beers

On tap at the Huether. Nice deep dark reddish brown with a medium khaki head. Aroma is of grains, sweet dark malts, tiny hint of mocha. Indistinct. Flavour is quite nice, roasty malts meet the signature grainy sweet flavour of all this brewpub’s beers. Finishes balanced with some lingering barley tastyness. Great session brew. This was very enjoyable and along with the Wuerzburger the best thing they make in my opinion.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours a deep amber with a spare creamy tan head. Aroma’s sweet, a bit sour and lightly roasty. Watery flavour is also a bit sour (is it off?), lightly roasted and with some fruit. Average bodied. Just passable.

Draught. At the brewpub. This is on tap, so it can’t be OLD, but ... read on. Deep clear mahogany pour, with a smallish creamy beige head (4-). Oddly sour caramel malt/grain aroma, a touch herbal, even a hint of dry cocoa. Taste - weirdly sour, grapeseed, dry oak and lemon juice sour, a bit like those oxidized old Gales corked bottles - but this is TAP; some coffee ground acidity and green herbal (almost mint) bitterness under the unpleasant sourness. Average-bodied, astringent/acidic mouthfeel, very weakly carbonated, with a thin, dry lemon-sour aftertaste - it wasn’t horrid, but I think without the dry tartness it might be solid. (not boozy at all, but also, not very roasty either).

Pint at he brewpub. Dark brown, small white head. Mild aroma (as most were here) - some toasty malt, some roast. Taste is nice - lots of solid roast and malt, good light to medium body, very easy to drink. Not complex but a nicely done. A solid brown ale.

Served in a chilled mug at the brewpub so the aroma may be skewed. This beer was delicious! I don’t know if it was because I drank it after a long day on the golf course, but this beer is my current favorite.

Deep mahogony/brown with a good finger of mocha foam. Smokey toast aroma with some caramel and fruit. Flavour is slight roasted coffee bean, some sweet fruit, roasted malt, and some liquid smoke. Creamy and easy drinking. One of the better from their lineup.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2008 [356-20070623] Tap @ Barley Works (Waterloo, ON). Roasty malty aroma has caramel background. Clear, dark brown red body with a medium-lasting foamy light tan head. Sweet and lightly meaty flavour has toasty roasty smokey malt notes. Medium body has nice smoothness. Refreshing! Really enjoyable, one of their better brews. (8/4/8/3/16) 3.9
