Lion Lager (Sri Lanka)

After becoming hooked on IPAs, stouts, Imperial stouts, ESBs, barleywines, etc. all with full flavors and lots of individual character, I’m none to impressed with lagers anymore. This one was average good, pouring typical brassy-gold with a typical white medium head with average retention, and average lace. Aroma was average froral fruit, yeast, citrus, and banana. Flavor was average fruity semi-sweet corniness, herbs and medicine, with no malt per se. Bright and astringent, weak mouthfeel and slightly bitter average finish. Good summer cooler, 4.1 ABV makes it an ok sessioner. Like I said, all lagers now seem average to me.

(bottle - 330 ml) Clear gold with a soapy white head. Aroma is very sweet and laden with corn. Bitter and metallic taste with hints of corn, grains and the slightest touch of hops. Nothing special, but nothing terrible.

After the Lion Stout, I was expecting a beer of equal, or at least slightly lesser character, but it was not to be. While decent enough in its own right, I found Lion Lager to be lacking and slightly corn-like in aroma and flavor, I really hate the use of corn in beer, which is werid becuase I usually llike corn in things, from ethanol to corn on the cob. Whatever, it doesn’t taste like ethanol but has a similar appearance.

Clear straw body with a loose, sudsy white head. Aroma and flavor of pils malt, fresh corn, lime, and light DMS. Mostly dry and crisp with some noticeable tartness. Light-medium body. Passable pale lager.

Pale gold in color with a thin, white head. Classic sulphur aroma of a lager with some continental, grainy malt. Flavor is nonexistent except for some shrimp shell from DMS and sweetness.

(bottle) Clear and deep golden colour with a stable bubbling frothy white head. Weak malty and grainy aroma with dense notes of hops. Light sweet malty taste with notes of cardboard and citrus fruits, watery low bitter finish.

’Tis a sad moment. Sril Lanka has sat comfortably on the top of my country ratings for a long time thanks to the excellent stout, but it’s about to drop down thanks to their lager. Pale yellow, bit grayish, very bubbly head, kind of fun to watch. Nose thin, bit of sweetness. Flavor generic hot-weather lager, sweet, some adjunct astringency, bit metallic, and a few grassy hops. Deeply underwhelming.

Bottled. Clear golden coloured with a small white head. Skunky aroma of malts with acidic and metallic notes. Slightly acidic flavour with notes of caramel and hops. Hoppy finish.
