COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lion Red is a full-bodied malt flavoured beer, balanced with a pleasant hop bitterness. It is batch brewed using high quality malt and the finest New Zealand hops to produce a 4% alcohol/volume beer. This leading New Zealand beer's history dates back to 1907. Originally known as "Lion Beer", this brand became known to the general public as "Lion Red", which aptly described its red-coloured label and can. Lion Breweries responded by officially changing the brand's name to Lion Red in the mid 1980's.

Nice amber hugh only ruined by lack of foam. Roasted nuttiness with a hint of caramel. Nearly no bitterness to speak of. Six packs are fairly cheap locally.

Can from The Beer Cellar April 2013. A much better offering from these guys than what I have previously had. At least with this there is a little bit of flavour and substance.

Bottle (Old Notes)-Pours a lighter amber with a small head. Aroma of malt and sweetness. Taste of the same with some bitterness. This light bodied brew is just a basic amber.

Tasted 4/2/2014. BB 06/03/14. Poured a clear pale amber with 5mm of white foam that diminished quickly to a collar and laced poorly. Carbonation low with small bubbles. Aroma subtle sweet malt and not much else. Taste of sweet malt fading to a very slight hops bitterness. Light body. Bland finish. Ordinary.

A simple malty red lager that loosely resembles Czech polotmavy without the savory, round body. Honey, toasted corn kernels, burnt barley malt / cigarette ash, light touches of DMS / cauliflower and a growing off-note of copper pennies. Mild sweetness, low bitterness, low acidity, medium-light body with a watery finish, faint roughness of carbonation and a touch of malt husks.

Pours a pale amber color with a thin white head. Aromas are malts, citrus, nuts... maybe a hint of caramel ? A short hoppy finish. Actually, I don"t think itís a great beer as such, but it was the first one I really drank with friends at 15, while spending a month in Withianga, New Zeland. Amazing souvenirs... the first beer of a long long series and the begining of a love story with that magnificent beverage !

The head is ok, the body orange-brown. It smells malty, intensive, bit flowery. The taste is malty, stale, bit bitter. 8/6/6/6/-/6

Poured from a can. Aroma almost non-existent, which is probably for the better because all I detected was the smell of a swimming pool changing room, after hours. Appearance: nice colour, clarity etc, but the head soon degenerates into dishwater. When I was young I used to enjoy hoovering up the suds, but now itís a bit off-putting. Taste: Itís all at the front. Malt sweetness, with the faintest hint of bitterness. Then itís all over as soon as it began with no middle or finish. Not a beer to enjoy for the taste, but easy to drink enough to get your buzz. BTW, the taste changes from ok to disgusting pretty quickly, so you are forced to drink fast.

Dark orange colour with a small head. Harsh and confronting after the elegance of NZís craft brews. Strong flavour of water.

From a bottle, this beer has little aroma, Deep amber colour with a small white head that soon disapreared. A malty balance with small amount of hops, be enough to keep the mouth feel fresh.
