Hugely malty flavor, lots of toasty toffee, chocolate and caramel, with a bit of underlying smokey chocolate goodness. Overall pretty clean with a bit of a dry, sour finish.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2006 Pours a dark brown (albeit not opaque or even close to black) with a tan head. The aroma has hints of burnt toast and bitter cocoa. The flavor is a bit bitter from roasted grains and some hop bitterness. The malts don’t assert themselves particularly strongly, but are detectable and lend a stronger sweet chocolate flavor towards the end of the glass. The mouthfeel is medium in body. Not bad.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2007 MWBF 2006: Smells like cold coffee, with a touch of roasted malt. A tad acrid and bitter with roasted malts, not much in the way of hops. Generally also lacking in any malt sweetness to hold it up at all. Quite thin actually. Brown with light head. update from sample at brewery: unchanged rating, still thin with coffee and cocoa.
