nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Oct 6, 2009 Rating #1100. Usually I’ve been saving a special beer for this rating, and this one fits the bill because it was totally unexpected and out of left field and ended up being really great. Had this at GABF 2009 after trying some other marginal offerings from Gella’s Diner/Liquid Bread. This one has won some awards in the past, and for good reason. LB’s Liberty Stout (or maybe it was an alias of this one) won gold at GABF 2009. Anyway, this beer is black in color with a medium-tan head and nice lacing. Aroma is a little sweet and very nice with roast, chocolate, coffee, and a tiny bit of smoke. Flavor is sweet roasted and caramel malt, chocolate, coffee with cream, chocolate, and smoke. Long on the finish. Medium-bodied and smooth and creamy on the palate from the oatmeal. Overall this is a great example of the style. Pawola22 (678), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Mar 12, 2009 Sampler at brewpub. Pours a slightly muddy looking brown body with a small, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate amount of lacing. Aroma is sweet and lightly roasted. Medium bittersweet chocolate and roasted caramels make up most of the nose. A bit smokey as well. Flavor is very similar, but more enjoyable. Good amount of sweet caramels and chocolates and a nice transition into a roasty finish. Dry and smokey in the finish as well. Palate is very smooth and medium bodied. Overall, the best beer offered by them IMO. Nice oatmeal stout. Biergeliebter (6), Kansas City, Missouri, USA does not count Feb 23, 2009 Great dark color with wonderful tan head. Not much lacing, as the growler was a few days old. Sweet aroma; chocolate and coffee. Flavor is nice and smokey, but surprisingly dry. Can’t wait to have it fresh from the tap. Harsebrau (164), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Feb 23, 2009 Another gift from Craig, by way of his momma. Deep, dark brown with hues of purple swirling through the edges. Tan head that, again, probably due to the growler being several days old, did not stick around for that long. Aroma of sweetness, chocolate, coffee. Flavor was smoky - tobacco - and chocolate and coffee on the finish. Dry, dry beer. Sucks all moisture from ones mouth. Theis (3617), Denmark Nov 17, 2008 Draught at GABF 2008. Black - brown head. Coffee, rye, smooth body, oat, chocolate, roasted, grainy, licorice, lovely, dryness. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Nov 1, 2008 Tasted 10/14/08. Growler from the brewpub. Thanks Keir! Pitch opaque hue with a bone white ring of head. Coffee aromas with hints of fudge, anise and pepper. Medium to full bodied with a great malt roast. Moderate, yet nice acidity. Solid coffee bitterness. Smooth stout overall. Good and fresh. Indra (2023), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Oct 30, 2008 16oz. draft. Roasty, sweet aroma, coffeeish and sweet with notes of milky chocolate, toffee and lightly burnt grains. Opaque brown-black color, head is light tan and slight, leaving fine lacing behind. Flavor is fairly well balanced between the sweetness and the more roasty aspects, more milky sweetness and coffee with plenty of chocolate in between and seeing a malty-driven bitterness enter towards the finish, blending with a mild spicy hop flavor. Moderately effervescent and thin on the palate, body is medium. Pretty tasty. joergen (8430), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 20, 2008 Draught at GABF 2008 as Gella’s Oatmeal Stout.
