COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Experimental Batch of Colonel Plug aged in gin-rum barrels.

Colonel Plug is a collaboration beer with Ray Spangler, American Homebrewers Association Homebrewer of the Year in 1987 and the founder of the Bloatarian Brewing League in Cincinnati. Spangler and head brewer Kevin Moreland decided to revive one of the three beer styles that originated in the U.S: Kentucky Common, the brewery said.

Kentucky Common is a sour mash beer that had an 18-hour mash before it was boiled to naturally sour the beer. The beer was then aged in an American oak cask.

9/27/2013: Listermann Colonel Plug... Deep bronze color with a thick beige head. Aroma reminds me of apple cider and vinegar, but in a really appealling way. The flavor is much the same with the added complexity of the wood aging coming through. This beer is both sweet and sour and has a nice combination of cooked pear and apple cider vinegar; the sour twang is just right and really brings the flavors together nicely. The flavors are bold and this beer seems like it would be a bit too heavy, but it’s not; the body is medium to medium-full and carbonated enough to keep it lively on the tongue and really bring out the flavors. I am unsure of the alcohol content, but some alcohol does show from time to time. Overall, I was very pleased with this beer and am looking forward to the other beers in this new pirate series. Draught at Listermann Brewing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #3 for this beer.

Tap. Poured a clear golden color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy sour grain, soft alcohol and wood aroma. Medium body with a tingly texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet & sour flavor with a medium to heavy sweet & sour finish of moderate duration. This is a solid beer for style.

Taster on tap at Listermann’s, served in a plastic cup. I’m told the tap version is aged in gin rum barrels. The bottles are aged in bourbon barrels. Darker amber color. Thin off-white head. Leaves decent lace. Nice moderate to stronger sour taste. Light sweet. Bigger body, light, kind of crisp carbonation, with a dry finish. Interesting spicy barrel character, some lime-citrus. Little alcohol heat in the finish. Nice barrel-aged sour. Interesting snappy taste to it.

Draft to pint at Listermann. Looks good; a fairly transparent amberish deep orange with thin off-white head and lively carbonation. Smells and tastes solid; mildly sour, oaky, and malty with a slightly tart and lively mouthfeel. An interesting and enjoyable beer.
