2/05/2014: Listermann Planetary IPA... I don’t like Citra hops on their own, but love Simcoe hops, so I was looking forward to giving this beer a try to see how the two hops balance out and I’m happy to say that IT WORKS! The aroma is a bit off-putting at first since it remindsm me mostly of ammonia and cat piss, but that eases up a bit as the beer has a chance to breathe. Then more of the citrus/grapefruit/pine from the Simcoe comes out softened by some mellon from the Citra. The hop flavor is very similar to the aroma with grapefruit, pint, mellon, and a splash of passon fruit meld together to form a pleasant hop profile and delivers a moderate level of bitterness. It finishes soft with more of the earthy, herbal, and grassy hop flavors appearing. The lightly caramel-flavored malt is like sweet bread and is definitely nothing but a supporting character, and that’s just fine. Overall, this is a good IPA that goes down easily and is quite pleasing. Draught (pint) at Listermann Tap Room in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #6 for this beer.

Sample at the Listermann taproom, kegged that morning. The beer pours a clear orange-amber color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of tropical fruit, hops and malt. Medium body with flavors of grapefruit, grassy hops and malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a citrusy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.
