2/05/2014: Listermann Planetary IPA... I don’t like Citra hops on their own, but love Simcoe hops, so I was looking forward to giving this beer a try to see how the two hops balance out and I’m happy to say that IT WORKS! The aroma is a bit off-putting at first since it remindsm me mostly of ammonia and cat piss, but that eases up a bit as the beer has a chance to breathe. Then more of the citrus/grapefruit/pine from the Simcoe comes out softened by some mellon from the Citra. The hop flavor is very similar to the aroma with grapefruit, pint, mellon, and a splash of passon fruit meld together to form a pleasant hop profile and delivers a moderate level of bitterness. It finishes soft with more of the earthy, herbal, and grassy hop flavors appearing. The lightly caramel-flavored malt is like sweet bread and is definitely nothing but a supporting character, and that’s just fine. Overall, this is a good IPA that goes down easily and is quite pleasing. Draught (pint) at Listermann Tap Room in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #6 for this beer.

Taster at beerfest - nose is cat urine. Sip adds malty backbone. Mildly hoppy. A nice change of pace from the brewery. Decent

Draft. Poured clear orange copper color with a huge frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy earthy citrus hop and small malt aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy citrus bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of medium duration. This is a good beer.

Draft to snifter (shared by alexsdad06). Looks good; a transparent golden orange with off-white lacing. Smells solid; Simcoe and Citra hops with a pale malt backbone. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours a clear dark golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor have citrus, earthy and herbal hops, grass, pale and light caramel malt, mild to moderate bitterness. Decent, but I like Intergalactic better.

On tap at Dutch’s. Clear yellow orange color. Thin white head, good dots and short ropes of lace. Good smooth lighter carbonation. Medium to bigger body. Lightly slick finish. Nice grassy, lightly piney hop aroma. Some light caramel malt. Moderate to bigger bitter, and some moderate sweet. Solid IPA, simcoe and citra show well here. Like Peter, though, I prefered the tropical fruit aromas of that the Nelson and Galaxy provided in the Intergalactic version. It may be just in my head, but a bigger malt profile is noticeable in this version, more caramel malt than in the original. Still a great, very satisfyingly hoppy lighter IPA though.
