Commercial Description:
Little Creatures was born to make a pale ale…a specific style of pale ale, a style that we are absolutely passionate about and one that we believe displays great balance of flavour and refreshment…complex yet highly drinkable. The beer's character is driven by the use of fresh whole hop flowers. Hop Flowers are carefuly selected that are bursting with aroma and contain all the essential oils and acids that deliver an uniqe flavour experience. Drink a few pints of this beer and you'll soon become one of us…a certified "hophead" craving those crisp citrus flavours of grapefruit and passionfruit and maybe a bit of honey, all backed up with a good balance of bitterness. If you're wondering what on earth malt or hops actually are then click on the two hop characters to the left and find out more. It's not just the hops that make Little Creatures Pale Ale what it is though. Selected malts are kilned in small batches to our specifications and are used exlusively in our pale ale. Two different yeasts are used to both ferment and bottle condition the beer. The latest technology and equipment is used to maintain absolute quality control and one of the main ingredients in the pale ale has got to be the amount of passion that it takes to produce a seriously good beer...we live for it! From brewing to release, a batch of pale ale takes about six weeks, allowing for two weeks conditioning in the bottle after packaging. No artificial preservatives or additives are included, just great ingredients.

Trying to remain objective - this is my beer of choice when buying a 6-pack from the standard Australian line up. This beer has a delightful caramel undertone wth nice light citrus flavours. The beautiful malt used in this beer is the real winner over other beers.

330mL bottle. Pours a clear pale gold with a small but tenacious head. Aroma is strong, citrusy and slightly resinous early on with dried fruit and honey coming in as it warms. Flavour is slightly malty with a nice hit of hop bitterness. Lively on the palate, light-medium bodied, smooth with a lingering crisp dry finish.

330ml brown bottle. Golden and slightly hazy. Head is small in size but lasting. Grapefruit and orange peel hop nose. Flavour is of sweet orange and zesty grapefruit hops. Crisp finish with some leafiness and more grapefruit. Pleasantly bitter. Medium body, medium carbonation. Good fresh tasting session ale, the only drawback is it’s price.

From a 330ml bottle on 31/12/2009. Probably the best widely available beer in the country. Instantly recognisable, with its lovely floral, hoppy aroma, beautifully balanced passionfruit-like flavour, and walloping bitterness. Truly excellent.

330ml bottle, Soho bar, Gisborne, NZ, served ice cold. Really liked this beer especially the beautiful hop aromas even when very cold. Will try this again at home served cool and re-rate then. Golden amber hue, small white shimmering fine bubbly lasting head, moderate lacing. Bursting with delicious hop aromas; tropical (lychee especially, passion fruit ) citrus (lemon, grapefruit) pine. Similar to Renaissance Paradox Blonde. Strong bitterness dominates the flavour, mild sweetness. Palate is very dry initially and lingering fairly long in the after-taste, light to medium body, thin texture, well/heavily carbonated, long bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours medium to pale gold, with a thin head that reduces to a persistent skim. Nose is mild 3C hops, plus mild clean yeast, and a whiff of flowers. Palate is a tastesplosion of hoppiness, but without bitterness, plenty of citrus and grapefruit, delicate yet juicy. Eminently drinkable, and very tasty; an IPA without the palate fatigue.

Another of those, ’Why haven’t I tried this before beers’ - well, it was well worth waiting for. Great fresh citrusy aroma and taste, with a lovely sharp bitterness that leaves a fine grapefruit flavour lingering on the tongue. Pleasant burnished orange appearance, plenty of tingle from the carbonation and a soft white head that stays constant throughout. Good stuff.

Bottle at Barmuda in Queenstown. Pours a slightly cloudy amber with a medium white head. Yet another solid pale ale in New Zealand- they’ve impressed me to no end with the APA and IPA styles. Aroma of floral hops, grapefruit citrus, and honey. The flavor is also hoppy and citrusy, with sweetness from the honey and some yeast for a nice balance. Bitter, crisp from active carbonation, and a nice bite.

Light copper. Lacy cream head. Honeyed citrus nose. Quite a lot of bubbles. Assertive rather than aggressive hopping. Complex resiny leatherwood middles. Carbonation doesn’t quite hide slight deadness on the palate. Very good rather than great. (rerate, old rating 3.7:) I’ve had a few of its local competitors recently and liked them well enough. But I think I under-rated this one, perhaps from drinking it a bit too cold. Everything works together here, and as the cliche goes, a champion team beats a team of champions.
