When the temperature drops, rain beats down and wind swirls around dark alleys, we seek out the comfort of the local tavern. Swathed in warm dim light, your hands wrapped around a rich, chocolaty English Porter, you can let your mind drift and heart beat slow. Mr Obadiah Rye Porter is a respectful nod to aged ales and our brewing forebears who were inspired to put pen (or quill) to paper. Expect spice from the malted rye, dark, nutty notes and a clean finish worth writing home about...

Draft at Beervana. Clear maroon color, small tan head. Aroma of lightly toasted brownies. Taste is lightly spiced brownies and cocoa. Needs a bit more rye.

Pours solid black in appearance, head typical of a porter. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Perfect level of carbonation, to compliment the medium to thick palate. Taste, bitter coca with a smoky finish and a lingering dry bitterness. The beer gets a little sweeter as it warms up. I've been looking for a beer like this all winter, pity it's a single batch.

Thick black with a cappuccino coloured head and heavy lacing. Aromas of dark chocolate, espresso, crushed nuts and roasted malts (perhaps a trace of soy sauce - thanks maneliquor). A long, pleasant and cleansing bitterness wraps itself around a complex dark chocolate, nut and spice flavour profile. The rye provides a fantastic point of difference to a lot of porters. Once again the single batch has nailed it, with a challenging but incredibly drinkable beer.

1L squealer. Pours deep black with a mocha head. Aroma has camp fire notes with chocolate wafer and a slight spice. Big earthy/spicey notes in the flavour with a bitter coffee backing and a slight nutty creaminess. Goodbye Mr Obadiah, the pleasure was certainly all mine.

Deep dark brown body with a tan head. Chocolate and coffee on the nose which is not as noticeable in the taste, smooth, pepper and spice coming through. Drinkable.

Pours dark brown with a lasting head. Nose shows roasted malt, roasted coffee and biscuity rye. Very similar flavours, but with rich roasty characters throughout. More coffee notes too. Carbonation seems a bit high, could be lowered a bit.

Typical smooth coffee and chocolate aroma. More dark, bitter malt than im used to for a porter but it equates to a very rich and moreish porter. Great mouthfeel, smooth carbonation.

568ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a small beige head, which lasts fairly well and leaves good lacing. The aroma has strong roasty and milk chocolate notes, with a touch of sweet spice. Citrus and spice hops up front lead into smooth milk chocolate, with nutmeg notes coming through. Roasty malt and cocoa make up the mid-palate, leading into a bittersweet finish. This is another good Little Creatures effort; it is quite complex for a porter, and excellent on a cold winter night.

Growler from Mane Liquor. Pours dark brown with some ruby edges. A small beige head with good head retention. Nose shows heavy roast and nutty tones - almost soy like. Touch of vanilla and spice there too. Taste shows peppery spice, heavy nutty notes - hazelnuts, light vanilla and balanced mocha tones. Very sessionable and a good balance o flavour there. Works surprisingly well. Definitely one of Creatures better single batches
