When the temperature drops, rain beats down and wind swirls around dark alleys, we seek out the comfort of the local tavern. Swathed in warm dim light, your hands wrapped around a rich, chocolaty English Porter, you can let your mind drift and heart beat slow. Mr Obadiah Rye Porter is a respectful nod to aged ales and our brewing forebears who were inspired to put pen (or quill) to paper. Expect spice from the malted rye, dark, nutty notes and a clean finish worth writing home about...

Bottle. Pours opaque deep brown black with ok tan head and good lace, diminishing to a small but ok coverage. Light aromas of milky mocha chocolate oats, bread, biscuit light rye, grain cracker, light floral grassy hops - biscuit and crackers to the front. Medium full body, chewy caramel front, making way for a light back end, finishing lightly roasty, hints of rye pepper among a generous chocolate and nutty pale malt character.

Bottle at Frenchman’s Cap with James and James. Pours dark into our plastic mugs, with a nice tan head. The aroma is an abundance of chocolate, coffee, and dark malts. The flavour is bitter chocolate, a little fruity (prunes, plum) and a little spicy. Coffee. Lovely.

Pint sized bottle Pours a near-opaque mahogany body with a thick tan head holding good lace. Rich yet subtle aroma; cocoa, molasses, fresh espresso, some dried fruits, spice and a touch of Pumpernickel bread. Thick velvety texture, somewhat sweet and oil upfront with a firm bitterness cutting through. Low carbonation, good length. Plenty of bitter chocolate on the palate, treacle and rich caramels, rye comes through with spice and staunch grain breadiness. Earthy spicy hops linger on finish, some slickness to boot with the bitterness. Seriously tasty dark ale. The texture has certainly been bolstered by the addition of rye, also adding more complexity.

This characterful, tasty rye porter is one of the better Little Creatures single batches. Would grab a few for winter if it became a part of their regular line-up. It nails the style nicely. Looks terrific. The rich aroma promises much and the beer pretty much delivers. Cacao, dark chocolate, all-spice. Dry finish. Very easy drinking for the strength. Smooth in the swallow. (On tap at Station Bar, Katoomba)
