Cask-conditioned at The Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol 13/9/08. Deep amber in colour with a slight, off-white head. Red fruit and sweet malt aroma. Malty flavour with some yeast and a short bitter finish. Forgettable.

Bottle (in NZ), pours a dark gold with a filmy foam white head. Lots of yeast in the aroma, with some juicy malt. Tart and fruity on the palate, with citric acidicness. I would say it hasn’t travelled too well, but some of the UK-based comments say the same. I’ll give it a couple of extra marks just in case.

Bottled, 500ml, from Happy Apple, Totnes, Devon as Suma Elphin Brook Bitter. Gaseous Brown to gold with slight head. Tart fruity aroma leading to an off, yeasty, acidic gassed beer, pretty awful really. Thin and fairly nasty with a cloying sweetness.

Bottle. Dark golden brown with an off-white head. Aromas are sweet toffee malts with some chocolate. Grapefruit and spices. Flavours are prickly grapefruit bitterness with hints of sweet chocolate and caramel. Citrus sourness on the finish with a dry finish.

Bottle. Thick brown beer with a strong head. The aroma is gently hopped, and the flavour is lightly caramel and hopped. Overall an average beer.
