Silphium (2028), Lansing, Michigan, USA May 21, 2008 12 oz bottle purchased from the brewery. This has to be the tiniest "brewery" I’ve visited, literally a converted garage run by one person off a rural road in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. But, craft beer is indifferent to geography, working its way into any little crease or crevice it can find in our varied landscape. This stout pours deep, opaque brown, topped by a medium tan head. Aroma is roasty, with molasses, coffee, and chocolate providing complexity. Roasted malt body with burnt caramel, apple skin, molasses, and coffee, an odd yet intriguing medley. I have to think the apple notes are a mistake, but they don’t ruin the beer. Overall, this stout delivers.
TexasAggie12 (64), Burnet, Texas, USA Feb 23, 2006 Nice dark black pour with a nice head. The aroma was nice. The Taste had a little coffee flavor with a hint of malt and sweet carmel. I thought this was a very good beer. hopdog (4649), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 22, 2005 12oz bottle acquired in trade with beerhandy. I found this one, forgotten, at the back of the fridge. Bottle labeled, drink before March (good thing it was in the fridge the whole time). Poured a dark black with an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, caramel, and chocolate. Tastes of chocolate, roated malts, caramel, and light coffee. Body on the thinner side. OhioDad (2492), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Oct 16, 2005 12 oz bottle via trade with beerhandy - Thanks Chris! - Pours black with a large rocky tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, and a touch of smoke. Flavor is much more rich. Chocolate, caramel, coffee, and roasted malts. Some nice hops finish it off. Body is very creamy and smooth. A fair amount of carbonation. A very drinkable stout. Nice. CaptainCougar (4664), Rockville, Maryland, USA Sep 11, 2005 Pours with a rich black body with dark brown edges and a thin dark tan head. Has a dry caramely butterscotch and black olive aroma with some dark fruitiness and lightly roasted malt. Body starts with a good light caramel sweetness and some nice bitter hoppy balance. Has a roasty dark chocolate finish. An enjoyable stout.
