masonjer (452), Holt, Michigan, USA Jul 1, 2008 Updated: Jul 2, 2008 On tap at the brewery. Nose is Citrus, trying to break through a layer of wood and bourbon. Flavor is more of the same, big toasty malt in the background, more barrel in the middle, some orange rind, even some ginger spice, and then a nice bitterness on the finish. For some reason, the barrel aged IPA just isnt my thing, but this one was done well, and was really neat to try.
drewbeerme (1840), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 17, 2008 on tap at GTMW ’08. pours hazy golden with white head. touch of rye, bourbon, citrus hoppy notes, nice nose. flavor is pretty sweet, hop bitterness has faded, sort of a citrus tartness. not overly barrel aged. okay but a bit too sweet and boozy. WeeHeavySD (1866), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Aug 17, 2008 Handbottle from my main man mike, BBB63. Thanks so much. All I gotta say is this sounds exciting. Pours rich orange with a bright white ring. Nose is sweet and citrussy and overall very nice. Taste is complex and full of citrus while retaining some interesting rye characteristics. This is incredibly smooth and very tasty. Drool I want more. pepsican (765), the beer wastelands of, Iowa, USA Aug 16, 2008 GTMW! Hazy orange with a thin white head. Aroma was skunky hops, caramel, coconut. Flavor was orange peel, funky hopes, pineapple, and more coconut. Very bitter finish. Ughsmash (3079), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 14, 2008 On tap at GTMW. Poured hazy, deeper amber with a short cap of white head. The aroma picked up juicy grapefruit with just a hint of oak and rye whiskey.. sweet overall with a very delicately-balanced barrel integration. The flavor was much drier than the nose with older grapefruit meat and caramel at the core.. barrel highlights on the back-end showing dry whiskey and lightly-sour oak.. seemed like it was missing some of its hops from the aging. Medium-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. solid, but better on the nose. BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA Aug 11, 2008 GTMW 2008 (and about 2 full pours in a pint glass because I rock and you don’t): Amber hue with a very good frothy head and good lace on my LIVERY PINT GLASS. The nose is RYE BABY along with floral and herbal hops, pineapple and mango, bready and grainy malts. The taste is twangy and tart with a moderate sweet pale malt background. Spicy peppery finish. The mouth feel is highly aggressive and sprite, utterly refreshing and dangerous. Ths is simply WONDERFUL and takes the base Cousin Jax to a new level of beer geekdom IMO. (FYI, MIBRomeo is a big wussy, haha)
