A German Helles (pronounced Hell-es) Lager – is brewed with water from the Eastman Springs. Steve and Wally hauled water from the famed Silver Queen Spring to the brewery earlier this summer to make the batch. Last year Steve met with the Eastman family to determine what style of beer would best capture the character of Colonel Eastman. The style they chose was a German Helles Lager. The Livery’s Silver Queen is brewed with 100% spring water from the historic Eastman Springs, located here in Benton Harbor at Mary’s City of David . North American malts and North American hops blend to create a truly drinkable light lager.

Draft to pint. Looks good for the style; a slightly hazy golden range with foamy white head. Smells of mild hops, grain, and lager yeast. Tastes like it smells with a pleasant mouthfeel. A good example of the style.

On tap at The Livery, overall this one did not blow me away but was still enjoyable, has a great hay and grassy aroma, has a nice hoppy finish and is very drinkable.

So, I got a bottle of this...yeah, a bomber... Either way the nice man at the Livery tent responded to my "why don’t you bottle" by handing me a delicious bottle of this at the MBG Harvest Festival this past October. It is now February, and I am finally taking this beer out for a test run. Tasty! I was hesitant, but my worries and fears were not warranted. This Helles Lager is awesome! Not at all what I would have expected. Nice bready aroma, hint of clove in there. Tastes quite sour, bit of skunk, but not in a bad way.. it’s got character. I split this with my buddy BeerBaron617, and well.. yeah, it was A-OK.

I felt quite priveleged to share this extremely rare beer with my best beer bud, MereLikesBeer. It poured a hazy orange amber, with fluffy white head. The aroma, while subtle, was a nice banana, malty sweetness. The flavor as well was really bready, and effervescent. Very solid table beer, but not memorable. Cheers!

Slightly hazy straw colored pour with a moderate white frothy head. Nose is lightly earthy with touches of light sweet malt. Flavor is also pretyy light...some biscuity maltiness and light earthy hopping. Decent drink but not very memorable.

Draft sample at MBGF Summer 2009. Poured hazy golden color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Solid balanced citrus and malt aroma. Medium body with slick texture and flat carbonation. Medium balanced flavor with a medium smooth sweet finish of moderate duration. Drinkable brew and above average for the style.

Growler courtesy of dmschefke. Pours copper with a slight chill haze and a white head. Smells of toasted malt, spicy, grassy, some tea, straw. Tastes of toasted malt, spicy, full bodied, earthy. Great example of this style.

Objectively speaking: A considerably underrated lager that goes well beyond the ordinary.
I like: One of the freshest tasting beer I’ve ever had. Hazy golden topped by a frothy white head. Superbly refreshing grassy, hoppy lager with exquisite toasty malts, crunchy, you’d chew on those malts until you’ve had a meal out of them. Bready (needless to say again extremely fresh bread), gently tart (seems to be a house character, but it totally fits as it just exposes its drinkability farther). Muscled maltiness for a lager, but just plain fresh, bright and poundable.
I dislike: I’ll repeat it again, The Livery is probably the single brewpub where I’ve disagreed the most with my fellow ratebeerians’ scores.

On tap at the brewery. This clear golden ale poured with a nice off-white head. The flavor is sort of sweet and sour and a bit skunky - it must be from that City of David water.
