Extra Special Bitters, or ESB’s, were the benchmark beers for British brewers to serve to their very special customers. Brewed with British pale and crystal malt, this copper colored beer finishes with a subtle dose of English Fuggles hops. Named after Benton Harbors’ Synapse Gallery and Center For Photography, now located on the upper level of The Livery.

Pours a clear brown with thin white head and no lacing. Aroma of slight citrus hops, caramel, and a nice malt presence. Flavor comes off with a funky bitterness and almost tasted dirty. Body was very thin.

Cask to taster. Looks good for the style; a hazy orange with foamy eggshell head. Smells of pale and crystal malt and mild hops. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Not bad.

I had this one at a festival, and ended up pouring it out. It doesn’t stand up well compared with other bitters. A little grainy.

Draw in snifter. Poured dark brown color with a large off-white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Medium toasted sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium sweet malt flavor with a medium pleasing sweet & bitter finish of moderate duration. Soft drinkable brew.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear brown-orange with a white head. Aroma of bland sweet malt. Flavor again of bland sweet malt and a slight sour twanginess. Not a very good ESB - the malt dominated but was not particularly flavorful. 5/4/5/3/11 [2.8/5]

On cask at the Livery 8.20.09. Pours a dark clear glowing mahogany with a tiny head. Basically not much of an aroma, inoffensive. Flavor is sweet glassy lightly buttery, light chocolate, toffee, subtle fruit. Thin watery body with zero carbonation.

On cask at The Livery. Almost clear brown with small white head. Aroma is dry fruit and some sweeter raisin. Raisin flavor with grape, sweet prune, some chalk, sweeter but in style. Medium to light body, cask carbonation. Nice, a very drinkabe, in style esb.

Handpull at the Livery served in a an English pint. Dark copper pour with a thin head of tan foam that quickly faded away. Light rings of lace coated the glass. The aroma had rich toasted caramel, biscuit, and some mild earthy hops. The flavor was full of smooth, rich malts. Caramel, dark fruit, bread, and a light English hop bitterness. Medium-bodied with minimal carbonation. A nice, clean session beer. Well done.
