Commercial Description:
Brewmaster Steve took his Belgian Amber Ale and re-fermented it in a merlot cask with 100# of sweet Michigan cherries from Husteds Farm Market. He than moved the resulting beer into another cask with 30# of tart cherries. 5 fermentations due to wild yeast and 9 months later, we have our version of a Belgian Kriek. Named after our good friend and musician, April Verch.

750ml bottle with about 6-8 months of age on it. Pours a lightly hazy, dark crimson color with a small head of smooth, off-white foam. Jagged flares of lacing jut out from the surface, clinging hard to the glass alongside random spots. The aroma is sweeter than expected, based largely in caramel and sweet cherry, with hints of dry cocoa and a hefty dose of vinous oak. Though some brett is detectable, it’s presence is mild, laying low in the background while the sweet-tart cherries and dark fruits do their thing. Flavors continue the theme, caramel coated cherries and earthy wood showing most prominently. The wine barrel lends a bit of a warm, boozy character, and serves to bring out and enhance some of the tartness of the fruit. Still, while tasty and well crafted, it remains a little sweeter than I’d like. The palate is medium-full, balanced, and warm, drinking incredibly smoothly for such a monster of a brew. Good stuff.

Bottle… October ‘09 O-Town Throwdown!... Murky, burnt caramel-colored ale with a small, off-white head that’s Zap!... gone in a flash. The nose is a blend of woody funk, cherry and vanilla. Full-bodied with tickling carbonation. The flavor is tart and fruity, but doesn’t even hint at the high ABV. The finish scorches my chest, but spares my tongue. Bottle courtesy of Beerlando

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Cloudy red amber color. The aroma is mild, sour, fruity, cherry kernels. It has a mixed sour, fruity, astringent flavor, with light residual sweetness, cherry kernels. The final is more dry and astringent. Maybe a bit confused.
