COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Style: Dampfbier

Local Option Dampf Loc is an all-barley warm fermented ale brewed by the folks from Chicago’s Local Option; inspired by “Dampfbier” originally crafted by medieval peasant inhabitants of southeast Bavaria’s Black Forest. During the fermentation process generous amounts of foam and surface bubbles burst in the tank, giving the illusion that the ferment is boiling or “steaming.” Tony Russomanno and Noah Hopkins took it upon themselves to brew Dampf Loc as a modern interpretation of its Teutonic predecessor, creating a “Hefe Gerste” ale that is true to its roots; unmistakable in character yet accessible to beer drinkers of all palates.

Dampf Loc has a mild hop profile, medium body with pleasant effervescence and a clear, rich, orange hue. Dampf Loc is ideal for warm months, yet enjoyable year round.

Pour is a hazy orange with some slight red around the edges, small off-white head. Citrus and grassy herbal hops on the nose with slight notes of light biscuit and caramel malts. Flavor is much like the aroma but just kind of bland, watery, not much going on. Light to medium bodied.

Tap at Meridian Pint. Pours a clear, light amber. Webby beige lacing. Nose is sweet cherry juice box, a bit vegetal with sweet greens and fresher broccoli. Taste is soapy, sticky, metallic with a sharp metal twang. Lemon soap and hydrogen peroxide in mouthfeel. Eh.

Brewvival Trip Beer 112. Draft at Brewvival. Cool to see a new (to me) midwest brewer there. It’s a shame I didn’t make it to their table before a they had one beer left. Pours a clear amber color with a large frothy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of herbal hops and toasted malts. The taste is toasted malts, caramel, herbal hops. Medium bodied.

Shaker on draft at the Local Option. Dark, muddy, amber-brown color, no clarity. The aspect that stood out to me was definitely damp malts. It felt a bit like wet bread with a hint of American hops hiding in there. Light drink, medium to light carbonation. Very malt driven and in a novel way. Very subued and gentle on the cheeks. I liked it but would not be my "go-to" beer.

Draft. Notes of citrus, sweet bread and floral hops. Pretty darn good beer. Wish it was in bottles...or more available around me.

500ml bottle served in a Stone imperial pint glass. Picked up at the local Binny’s. A: Pours a burnt caramel-like color with a semi hazy body and dark amber edges. A one finger off-white head forms on the pour and slowly recedes to a thin film and a slightly thicker collar. Clingy and soapy waves of lace are left down the glass. S: Light citrus notes are present with a slight nutty malt body and small yeast finish. T: The malted barley body is present right up front and is slightly oaty, as well as nutty, in nature. A hint of toasted malts come through in the front. Light weisse yeast and a mild hop presence are both noticeable as well. The is a tiny bit of citrus fruit presence that gets drawn out at the end. M: Medium to light bodied with ample carbonation. The finish is slightly dry and malty. Very drinkable. O: Is this a nice representation of the Bavarian peasant ale? I don’t know, but it was good. I can definitely pick out the weisse yeast used and I think it’s a nice touch. Definitely drinkable. I would obviously choose much more flavorful brews given the opportunity, but it was a nicely crafted beer. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-22-2011

Super hazy deep apricot coloured body with a copper and amber glow and a thin, fast-dying off-white head. Aroma of metal, alcohol, apricots, fruit, pungent hops and a bit of medicine. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty flavour at first with a medicinal feel and a malty, yet almost caramel and toffee sweetness going right through. Aftertaste is nice and robust with some lighter alpha acid hops, some mild yeast notes and a bit of good malt as well. Overall, an interesting beer and definitely worth trying to find - for the style and for the legend of a bar it represents in Chicago. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from Binny’s in Chicago (Lincoln Park), Illinois on 04-December-2011 for US$6.66 (love it) sampled at home in Washington on 10-September-2012.
