COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mourning Wood is an oak-aged coffee amber ale. Fresh American oak used during the aging process and Dark Matter’s El Salvador San Jose pulp-natural coffee aromatically drive the beer yet they remain subtle components of the beers’ overall flavor profile. This amber colored, medium-bodied, and extraordinarily well-balanced ale has a delicate taste that is appreciated by beer drinkers of all palates.

Murky bright brown or dark orange and a decent film. Rich nutty cinnamon and rolling tobacco. Vibrant oily and boozy without being overly sickly sweet ABV. Neat nuttiness on the finish but very clean.

Bottle, Fancy Al Fresco Tasting

Pours a hazy copper from the bottle with lasting tan head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma starts coffee, then falls to burnt wood, toasted bread, caramel and hints of vanilla. Taste is a vanilla coffee with caramel and toasted bread. Mild carbonation, no oxidation or hint of the booze, mild bitterness. Very nice.

Bottle pours a murky light brown/amber with a large khaki head. Aroma of mild coffee, caramel malts, light oak, and scotch tape, weird. Thin coffee with hops on the front of the palate, caramel and oak, with more coffee on the finish. Intetesting. Reminds me of a sweet iced coffee drink from Starbucks.

500 ml. Darkish copper with a lasting film of cream. Aroma is caramel coffee and biscuit. Tastes of toffee, coffee, biscuit and a touch of peppery wood. Light-medium body has medium carbonation and is drinkable even though slightly to the sweet side.

Pours a cloudy amber with a smaller khaki head that leaves some spotty lace. Nose involves dried fruit notes, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans, fairly deep with complexity. Pretty sweet, fairly bitter. Medium bodied, somewhat oily, medium carb, creamy, with a lengthy chocolate and coffee tinged finish. Pretty decent brew, a mixed bag of sorts. The coffee takes over after a while, which isn’t so bad.

500 ml bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours a cloudy amber colour with lasting cream-coloured head and lots of floaties. Aroma is fresh coffee beans, biscuit, caramel and light oakiness. Flavour is very much coffee-forward with gently toasty biscuit, sweet caramel and some light vanilla and oak. Fine carbonation. Neat one.
