Mourning Wood is an oak-aged coffee ale developed and brewed by Local Option Bierwerker. Fresh American oak used during the aging process and Dark Matterís El Salvador San Jose pulp-natural coffee aromatically drive the beer; while remaining subtle components of the beersí complete flavor profile. The amber colored, medium-bodied, and extraordinarily well-balanced ale was first unveiled at the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers in November 2011. Mourning Woodís taste is delicate and should be appreciated by beer drinkers of all palates.

Ruby red, quite hazy, big beige head. Smell of coffee, oak, grain, some dark fruits and malts. Moderate sweet, dark fruits, caramel, some malts, more coffee and some tannins. Moderate bitter finish. A very strange beer. Good malt base and hops, but not really sure about that coffee added

Pours a hazy light brown with a long-lasting white head. Aroma is sweet caramel, coffee, and chocolate. Flavor is an incredible blend of caramel, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, oak, and malts. Tastes and feels more like a stout than an amber ale. Delicious.

1 pint bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Hazy dark amber color. Tiny size head. Stale coffee, grainy notes in aroma. Toffee, sweet, coffee, cherry, woody notes in taste. Sweet body.

Appearance: Pours out an amber-hued body, lightly hazed, with a smallish, sustained, ivory-hued head.

Smell: Niiice. The satiating coffee bean scent is forward, followed by the American oak, the caramel (presumably American as well), toasted malts, teensy hint of vanilla, and subtle, restrained hop notes of floral and citrus.

Taste: A ladle of sweet caramel leisurely drizzled over toasted bread crusts and biscuit tops, then, a big sip of roasty coffee. Citrus backed with minute amounts of florals and green herbs. A little tangy cherry emerges upon warmth. Moderate bitterness. Bittersweet, caramel-coffee on the finish with some lingering oakiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Enjoyed it! Tasty, with good oak accents, and, I know I say it every time, but, I do enjoy the use of coffee in non-stout beers.

From my limited samples, I have found coffee does quite well in ambers. It seems to shine there more so than it does in stouts. This particular coffee amber pours a hazed red orange color w/ small but long-lasting head of fine bubbles. This is very much a coffee-centric brew and it works because the coffee flavor is so nice: smooth, roasty and chocolaty. It works really well for a coffee beverage served cold. The downside of this is there is not much beer character aside from a bit of malty sweetness but, hey, this is a tasty beverage regardless. The texture is medium bodied and fine carbonation lends a nice creaminess. Looking through the other ratings, it seems to me there must be a bad batch in there somewhere. Some of these ratings are way out of line from what Iím tasting here.

Pure stale coffee aroma. Tastes of stale coffee. Some butter. Very one dimensional beer. Just coffee and butter. Itís the evening - I wanted beer, not breakfast.

Deep mahogany brown body has some dark magenta tints to it and a light tan head perched atop showing moderate retention.
Another one with ratings all over the place, just like the BA Kentucky Common. Strange. This one seemed pretty straightforward delicious to me, and I consider myself to have a pretty low tolerance for coffee being overdone in a beer.
Instead, chocolate and caramel notes are intricately woven with light vanilla, bittersweet, oily oak notes and very dry, almost Spanish-like coffee flavors ending dry, as all the Local Option beers have, thus far (kudos to that, for sure). More vanilla, lightly toasted grains and some light fruitiness lying underneath (cherries, peaches, oranges) in the aroma with light fruitiness emerging in the flavor, as well, and complementing the malt flavors to produce a moderate complexity. Zesty but not overdone carbonation and a supple texture (another thing most of their beers had in common). Very enjoyable beer. The finish has a moderate dose of acidity, as well, further adding to my enjoyment.

Decent. Murky brown pour light tan head. Some cheap coffee and malt aroma. Some caramel malt coffee taste in a medium body moderate carbonation. Not that great but OK.

Bottle. Aroma is cold brew coffee, roasted grain, maybe some brown sugar, and the taste is a dry cheap old coffee flavors thatís a little sweet at the end.
