COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Local Option Morning Wood: Local Option Morning Wood is an oak-aged coffee ale developed and brewed by Local Option Bierwerker. Fresh American oak used during the aging process and Dark Matter’s Mexico Vera Cruz coffee aromatically drive the beer; while remaining subtle components of the beers’ complete flavor profile. The amber colored, medium-bodied, and extraordinarily well-balanced ale was first unveiled at the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers in November 2011. Morning Wood’s taste is delicate and should be appreciated by beer drinkers of all palates.

On tap @ Local Option. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head that dissipates completely. Aroma has a lot of coffee with some backing notes of oak. Flavor starts with light grain but finishes with strong coffee and oak.

Not my favorite form this brewery. It just seemed like caramel juice to me. I liked the hints of coffee and oak but it just came over as a super malty caramel amber.

4 oz pour on tap at Haymarket Brewpub (Chicago, IL). Excited to finally rate this. Pours a rich deeper amber copper hue, healthy sunset glow throughout, gentle haze, with a bigger cakey beige head atop, sticks around well and laces pretty well. Aromas are gentle oak and coffee, touches of caramel and biscuity malts, gentle soap, coffee strikes more into dominance at it warms a touch more. But, a gentle yet decent aroma. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied offering a healthy dose of coffee, roasty espresso mixes with earthy grounds, touches of biscuits, gentle toast, and some vanilla creaminess. A powerful flavor up front for what I was expecting. Gentle oak chips provide some mellow vanillin, touches of spice, as the backend still has some life. Biscuits, toffee, pretzels, and just a touch of gentle dryness. A bit sweet overall, a more decadent flavor for the appearance, taste is assertive, a bit one dimensional. A nice stronger coffee beer that showcases the coffee and some kisses of oak. Nice.
