Mourning Wood is an oak-aged coffee amber ale. Fresh American oak used during the aging process and Dark Matter’s El Salvador San Jose pulp-natural coffee aromatically drive the beer yet they remain subtle components of the beers’ overall flavor profile. This amber colored, medium-bodied, and extraordinarily well-balanced ale has a delicate taste that is appreciated by beer drinkers of all palates.

500mL bottle. Opaque brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of vanilla, caramel, sweet earthy hops, and coffee. Medium to thick mouthfeel with a sweet finish with a slight alcohol burn.

Tap at Devil’s Advocate in a pint glass with commonshawn. Post-Prince tribute block party experience from afar. Light amber colored hue with minimal lacing and head. Nose has elements of caramel and coffee with sweetness dominating. Taste has some subtle coffee notes but resembles a caramel syrup filled coffee drink from Starbucks. There is some bitterness towards the end when hops come into play. Malt is still running the show overall and hits the palette heavy in the finish and aftertaste. It’s the first oak aged coffee amber I’ve ever had and it falls just short of generating full on mourning wood. Still elicits a little excitement though.

Bottle. A big beige fluffy head slowly falls leaving sticky lacing. I rolled the bottle and plenty of gloppy sediment was loosened. The beer is opaque orange brown. I smell a lot of rich caramel and toffee. The flavor has coffee in front with oak. Sweet fruit behind that and it is raisin and tangerine. Toffee. Interesting stuff and it is complex. A lot going on here.

Bottled. 15cl sample. The aroma has caramel, some grassy hops, hint of coffee, some oak. Amber coloured beer with a medium, off-white head. The taste is light bitter and sweet, has caramel, raisin, some grass and finishes with a touch of coffee. Very good brew.

Picked this one based solely on name, but it ended up being a solid selection. Light color with strong coffee flavor.
